Tank capacities
« on: May 30, 2018, 02:28:32 pm »
I've had my 2400 for 7 weeks now, my model has the 23 gal. black tank. With the tank completely empty I started filling it using 1 gal. water jugs, it held 17.5 gallons. that's 5.5 gallons or 24% less capacity than stated by PC. I assume the other tanks are incorrect also. We boon dock a lot, very disappointed.

When you fill the tank with your measuring device, are you using the tank lights for your indication of full...,or filling until it backs up in the shower?  The indicator light may not be precise enough for exact measurements

I agree.  When my tank indicator turns red, there is still plenty of filling that can be done.  I know this well because at the end of every RVing season, I bleach the waste tanks to the max for maximum disinfecting coverage.  I do so because we cannot afford to have sewer gas permeating from our PC given we sleep one floor above it.  We must have the cleanest waste tanks of any used motor home.

I filled the black tank until water was in the neck of the toilet.

Oh....that is really full.  :'(

I never measured my tanks.  Maybe I shouldn't....ignorance is bliss.

I drained the fresh water tank and filled it using the 1 gal container. It held 18 gal. it's suppose to hold 31 gal. I filled it till water came out the over flow. I just went from disappointed to depressed.

Lynn,

I would share that information with the factory.  It sounds like you have the wrong tanks in your PC.

If you look inside the cabinetry where your fresh water tank is located, do you see a lot of extra space around the tank, space for a bigger tank?

My apologies rvrunner, I misread your original post as grey tank.  I can understand your concern, but I would also measure the capacity of grey as well.  If you can access the tanks, perhaps measure the dimensions and do the math.  It would give you a rough idea. X 2 what Ron said as well on factory call.

Maybe we should all test our tanks. :'(

Just a thought though:  is the 1 gal container really 1 gallon?  Not doubting but it seems if two tanks are off the mark maybe it's not the tanks?

If you go to Walmart to the Culligan water refill station you'll see 1 gallon jugs used for fresh water. It's the same as a milk jug. That's what I used.

My fresh water tank is 27.5 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 12 inches high. There is not much extra space around the tank, there is 4 inches from the top of the tank to the top of the cabinet it's in. I don't know how to figure how many gallons it will hold using those dimensions. I was told PC uses the outside dimensions of the tanks to determine its capacity. That means actual capacities would be a little less than stated but 25 to 40% is way off.

Based on your measurements Lynn, that would be just over 25 gallons (231 cubic inches per gallon).  When you did your measurement with water, was the tank completely empty?  I wonder if some was still in the tank when you did your measurement.

The drain comes out the side of the tank not the bottom so 1 or 2 gal. could still be in the tank when drained. 25 gal plus 6 gal for the water heater would equal 31 gal. which is what my 2400 is rated at. Thanks Gary.

I  filled the gray tank and didn't quite get 32 gal. in. It's rated for 35 gal. I'm happy. Strange thing, it backed up in the kitchen sink, not the shower. It's hard to measure the black and grey tank because of there odd shape. As it stands my 2400 has close to 20 gal, fresh water, 17.5, black, and very close to 32 gray. I can carry some extra water, the gray tank is fine, the black tank will just have to be dumped often, I could cut back on my high fiber diet.
