Towing with a PC
« on: November 03, 2010, 02:40:13 pm »
Our '04 2350 has a V10 and a 5,000lb hitch so we decided to tow our 1965 Sunbeam Tiger sports car from Southern California to Rapid City, SD for a big Sunbeam get together.  We borrowed the trailer and had the rig fitted with an electric brake controller.

With the trailer loaded we were close to the rated capacity, but the rig towed well at about 65 m/h on the level. We made the mistake of going through Denver which involves crossing the Rockies via the Eisenhower Tunnel in excess of 11,000 ft which is right at the performance limit of our PC/loaded trailer combination. We just made it over the top in 1st gear. On the way back we went via passes into Salt Lake City; at about 8,000ft these were a lot more manageable. I have no doubt that without the trailer the PC would have done fine on I-70.

Bill, we came back from Rocky Mountain NP/ Grand Lake, Co via I70 through the tunnel and through Denver on a Friday afternoon. The PC run in "D" the whole time and kept up with the traffic. Love this motorhome.

I think the newer torqshift transmission introduced in 2006 has added a little extra "edge" in such extreme towing circumstances.  Our 2007 E350-V10 2350 tows our 3800 pound Jeep Liberty with no issues so far.  I admit we have not yet climbed that I-80 Vail pass towing the Jeep.  Only with a 2100 pound car with no issues that time.

BTW: BillRo, It's great to have you on-board.  You are the only 2004 owner I know who spends time here.

Do you have a single coach battery or twins?

I think Ron may have hit on the tranny differences I have run the Eisenhower both ways with a 3600lb towed and never get below 40-45 unless there is a back up.  Ron did they move I-80? Kidding.

I see Ron is very active on the board! '04 PCs only have provision for a single battery. IMHO the dual battery provision is a major upgrade and I would install 2 X 6V. I currently use the biggest Interstate I can get in, the SRM-29. When fresh I can dry camp for 5 days.

I recalled about the battery because we seriously considered an 04 in 07.  We would have bought it except the seller wanted too much.  For not so much more money, it opened us up to special ordering exactly what we wanted brand new.  Still an 04 is just like a 2010 with only minor differences, the battery (s) and invertor being the biggest that I can remember.  An 04 is the first year of today's version.

Billro:  Love the Sunbeam.  They were cool little cars.  Thanks for the picture. Anyway, our mh has the new tow/haul mode on the tranny.  That makes a world of difference in the mountains, esp when we are towing our 4,200 jeep liberty with diesel engine.  It looks like you managed well enough with yours though.  Welcome to the forum.
