Toad or not in Alaska

Toad or not in Alaska

Planning on Alaska in 2018 in our new to us 2351 (E450 Chassis).

For those that have gone or intend to go, did you have a toad on the trip?  I understand you probably would with a larger PC but I think the 2351 is on the edge. 

We have a Honda CRV already set up as a toad as we downsized from a Class A to the PC.

All opinions and thoughts are welcome.

     We just did Alaska in our 2100 with no toad. We never tow, but did rented a car in Fairbanks and Anchorage. We saw a lot of people towing, but mostly bigger rigs. If you are thinking of any ferries, look at additional expense as well--unless you are parking the PC and only taking the car.

We have driven to Alaska and back twice over the years in a 28 footer. You never need a toad except possibly for the cities. White Horse has the sights either on the perimeter with plenty of parking or in the city you can park at the visitor's center and everything to see is within a few blocks. No problems with Dawson Creek or Dawson City.

Some of the Anchorage and Fairbanks sites have parking some more challenging. But not worth all of the miles to tow a car for. (Of course we have never towed so probably biased)

The three general recommendations are get a mile post, a church's camping guide, and give yourself plenty of time to allow yourself to take your time.

We took a three month trip from TN to AK via the Rockies (Tetons north) and the Alaska Highway using a Lance truck camper and Dodge 3500, so we upsized to a PC.  Even with the truck, there were times when we hesitated to leave it at a trailhead when we wanted to hike or wanted to take off in the evening, but didn't want to unhook everything at the campsite.  For the next trip, we're towing a medium-size motorbike in a small closed trailer, hoping that will give us the flexibility we need.

We traveled to Alaska this summer in our 2551 and did not tow. Our single snafu was at Denali because we travel with two dogs. There was a dog walker at the RV park, but we didn’t plan far enough ahead to rent a car leaving us unable to go on an eight hour bus trip into the park. I second Church’s and the Mile Post! Overall, we found Alaska to be very RV friendly with parking. We also would also be happy to answer any questions, share our itinerary, etc. It's an incredible trip - enjoy!

A little off subject; but did you just purchase the 2351 from Phoenix. We just traded our 2351 in and saw it at the factory with a sold sign on it. Anyway, we lived and worked in Alaska for 13 years and traveled the Alcan many times. I would not pull a toad with a 2351. Just not worth it IMHO. You could run into some place where parking was difficult but you could do the same with any car.. And the toad will take a beating. Many roads in Alaska are still not paved, frost heaves  abound in the spring and there is always construction. And not only in Alaska. As mentioned, the milepost is a very big help. But, the trip is worth any problems you may run into. And as mentioned, take plenty of time. Oh, and bring money.
