Should have built on E450
« on: July 16, 2017, 01:44:31 pm »
Just weighed our slightly extended 2400 at Cat scale.  Lightly loaded with us, clothes mostly, 3/4 fuel, full water, empty holding tanks.
Front axle 3680# or 74%
Rear axle 8360# or 98%
GVW 12040# or 96%
Was thinking of adding Sumosprings to lift the rear but still couldn't even add the weight of a scooter or a cargo rack.
Suggest anyone ordering a PC larger than a base 2100 should at least consider the E450.

Here is the weight of our 2350.

Sticker Phoenix Provided

Weighed empty but with full gas tank and propane tank
I exited the PC during the weigh-in as not to include my own body weight.
I did make many changes to our PC with suspension upgrades as well as interior stuff which added some weight, but so much more would be surprising.  I wished I had weighed our rig the day we brought it home from Elkhardt.

Weighed-in near the start of our "heaviest" trip
- Irene and me in the two front seats
- full water tank and lots of bottled water stored in the dinette benches, also other extra supplies
- full tank of gasoline of 55 gallons
- tow vehicle weighed separately but did include the tongue weight
This trip put us only 20 pounds shy of the over-all limit with our 2007 11,500 E350 chassis which offered our softest ride ever.
Our rear axle was officially over-loaded by 420 pounds given it is rated at 7800 pounds which sort-of explains our slight rear sag.  If our PC was built on the 2008-2018 chassis, it would be been perfect because the ratings increased since 2007.  I wonder how Ford increased the rear axle rating....maybe adding a leaf spring or two?  One thing certain, we don't have a weight issue with our 4600 pound rated front axle with 460 pounds of margin.

Thanks Ron,
Thinking the wife has hidden hoards of collected rocks somewhere as Lucy did in the old movie The Long Long Trailer.
If I'd known of the 2351 would have been a better choice for weight distribution but still marginal on E350.  Ford does sell a softened sprung E450 derated 300# would add capacity.
Probably should just go ahead with a helper spring and forget about carrying anything on the back.

When we ordered our 2016 2351, Earl suggested that we have it built on the E-450 chassis. I checked the weights and thought it was a good idea. He was right. We have had zero issues with the heavier chassis and it handles and rides very well.
