Best Air Conditioner ?
« on: June 04, 2017, 06:01:36 pm »
Anyone have any feedback as to what the best air conditioner is for rv's such as the PC 2350? Am thinking of getting one installed this summer. At present I don't have one. I have solar panels that come within 12 inches of proposed location, protruding maybe a couple of inches high.  Wondering if a riser kit is available if needed.

Hi Denny and Barb,

You live in Wisconsin?  If at all possible, I would arrange to have Phoenix install the a/c unit for you.  As far as which a/c unit to consider, they should be able to offer a few choices suited for your particular PC with solar panels.  Nobody knows your PC like they do.  They will also know best how to wire things up for you.  Working with the factory could even be one of your most affordable unit + installation choices.

A few people have had a Coleman a/c unit installed in-place of the standard Dometic Duo Therm.  Maybe they have some input with regards to their satisfaction.  One thing certain about our Duo Therm.  It cools down our 2350 no-slide & thermal windows very well, but it sure is noisy.

Thanks Ron for your info. Yep, we do live in northern Wisconsin, but looking at a AC mainly for an extended stay at our 2nd home of Arizona. Usually cool enuf in Wisconsin here.

Well, I googled for problem with solar panels too close to AC, so realize that there is no AC snorkel available to raise AC above the solar panels. So Solar has to be remounted to accommodate the footprint of Mr. AC.  Ok I can live with that. Was up on roof today measuring.  Not a show-stopper. BTW,had PC pre wired for AC. So wires and circuit breaker are already there. But may have local RV dealer install AC as the physical weight may be more than my buddies and I want to tackle.

Also googled some of more popular AC's for Motorhomes.   What do you or others think of this one?   Atwood 15025 Air Command 13,5K BTU Non-Ducted White RV AC . ... https://www.my12voltstore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=15025&gclid=CjwKEAjw387JBRDPtJePvOej8kASJADkV9TLxK08y9zM0JNdPw-PmYoySFbD3aqFq4PzkUdiyeTYqhoCqV_w_wcB

There description that there unit is the only one using two separate motors has me confused. All AC units use two separate motors. One motor is sealed into  the compressor can which drives the pump for the refrigerant. The other motor is for the fan, it has two shafts  for the indoor and outdoor fan blades.
The style of compressor has a lot to do with noise levels. The older piston style pump is a lot nosier then the newer screw or vane pumps.

Trust me, you want a 15,000btu a/c.  The 13,500btu units just a bit too small, I have had 13,500 units in a 20' Winnebago Minnie, 25' Lexington and now in my 27' PC (2551}.

It's not clear from the link you posted whether that unit has an electric heat strip.  It also states that the Atwood has a CFM rating of both 330 and 360?

The Coleman Mach 8 (15,000 BTU unit) has a CFM rating of 300, is 4 inches shorter than the Atwood, has two motors like the Atwood, and has two rather than Atwood's three fan speed settings.  It's interesting that this Atwood unit has higher 'effective' BTU ratings than the listed ratings. Sounds great if true.

In our experience with Arizona-like heat in a 2552 with the Coleman 15,000 BTU unit and dual panes windows with shades drawn....we could cool the RV down by max 20 degrees.

Speaking of heat strips, we have used ours a number of times.  It works well to take the chill out of the RV on a cool or damp night.  Of coarse it's still noisy but not quite as bad as when running the a/c unit.

We had a Coleman Mach 8 on the Casita trailer we used to own; and it was tremendously loud, especially on the outside.  Many Casita owners were complaining even to the point of seeking a recall from Coleman or a class action lawsuit against Coleman and/or Casita.  I think eventually Coleman sold a modified fan blade kit that the owner could install themselves.  Not a pretty situation . pyho

Yes, they sold a kit to reduce the noise on older units.  The new units no longer have that problem.

Our new class A has two Coleman units and we love them.
