Air conditioner
« on: June 03, 2017, 08:59:00 pm »
My air conditioner in my 2350 has always stayed on.  Today when I returned it was off.  Very scary as my dog was inside.  Now I cannot keep it running more than an hour.  Any suggestions  as to what is going on.

What do you mean 'stays on"?  Does it blow a breaker?  Is the fan still running?  What does the thermostat say?

Do you have a power manager on your electric? Ours will trip off and stay off if the campground power is flaky. We've had it hook up fine and run awhile then die later. Some campgrounds go into brown out mode when multiple units start running their AC units. They don't have enough power to support all the heavy use.

the majority of the times it is what 2 Frazzled stated. Low voltage causes high amperage which causes the compressors internal breaker to trip. It sounds like if you ever unplugged your refrigerator and plugged it right back in. You will hear a hum and click a few times before it restarts. If you have access to a digital vote meter plug it into one of your outlets. If the  voltage drops down into the 90's when the air conditioner tries to start you have a voltage problem.
But your clue that it will run for only an hour. The symptom usually is a dirty condenser. Even though you have a fairly new PC the variables are how much you have used the air conditioner and where is was used. Some places here in the north east we get a lot of fuzzy stuff floating in the air from poplar trees and dandelions. This is drawn into the condenser coil and forms a mat like material over the fins. It plugs of the air flow and the unit over heats. It will trip the thermal overload. And will reset after the unit cools down.
If this is the cause you can fix it by removing the cover  and brush off the debris and then wash the coil down with a garden hose.
WARNING when removing cover shroud, beware of bees.

Joe R offers some great advise on cleaning.  The white fuzzies from the cottonwood trees in our area can plug up the cooling fins of our house a/c unit.

I have one of these plugged in all the time in a prominent location: https://www.amazon.com/HUAHA-Voltage-Testers-Electrical-Instruments/dp/B01LVWUV7L/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496588213&sr=8-1&keywords=plug+in+volt Usually it is in the plug in the kitchen so we can always tell what the voltage is in the coach with a glance.  Often has given warning of less than ideal voltage even before the EMS safety cut things off.  Good voltage will be 110 to 118 and steady.  The actual number will vary from place to place.  Mostly watch for how steady it is.  If you see it going up and down all the time that is a good indication that the local circuit is overloaded and bears careful watching.

Could be the power manager. It happened to me last weekend in Memphis. I just turned the AC off, waited a few minutes and turned the power back on. Worked fine. We also worry about leaving our dog in the coach when it's hot. I found a free app called "Presence". It will monitor video and audio using a cell phone. Internet connection is required. We leave one cell phone in the coach aimed at a thermometer and can monitor the temp in the coach from anywhere. Uses very little data.

Jatrax, I have the same unit. Wasn't sure if it would be beneficial at first but for so little cost to me it's a no brainer.

It would be helpful to post what resolved your issue with the air conditioner. Thanks.

We just came back from 2100 miles around and about. SC. N C. Tennessee  and found the front. AC would run forever more, then turn off and in a minute or two right back on again... Not sure if it is a thermostat problem or somethng is out of whack on the AC ... We were told to find a Dometic warranty qualified dealer but Mr has been sick since we got home so no hunt yet.  Not sure coming up on 4th is a good time to deal with any service entity.  Don't do drop off anywhere.
So the fun. Begins... He did change the water intake valve sent by Kermit and we bought a new pump since it did not work right.. Ran at odd times... Little glitches are a big headache. And so it goes. PWS
