Do you leave your sink cover over the sink while driving?
« on: May 19, 2017, 08:55:02 am »
My wife always put the sink and stove covers into the slot behind the stove before we leave. Then she puts towels over the stove to muffle the grates from rattling. I wonder if we could leave the covers in place and do the same thing. PC is the only RV I have seen with storage slots for the covers, so I wonder what those folks do.

What do you do?

Tom:

We always replaced the sink covers, and plan to continue with the new unit.  Linda puts  dish towel in the burner area to prevent rattling.  The new stoves supposedly don't rattle, but we opted for the "old Style", so will do the same.

We leave ours on, Tom, and then we put down a piece of no slip material on top of the covers.  That allows us to store small plastic baskets full of lightweight things while going down the road.  We are mindful of what is in the basket in case of emergency braking that might through stuff around a bit.  When we get where we are going and deploy the slide, we then move the stored stuff to another area (often behind the driver's seat or on the carpeted area exposed in front of the refrig with the slide out) and then have use of the sink and stove area.  When camped, we just stow the covers in the allocated slot behind the stove.   The covers are nice but they are pretty heavy.

We leave the burner covers on mainly because we use that space for prep more than for cooking. We use the sink to hold the Keurig and a container of kitchen utensils while traveling. Since ours is a rear kitchen, we don't hear much from the back area...maybe a loose dog toy.  :)(:

Hi Tom,

We ended up leaving the sink cover home because we never used it.  More recently I made something more useful to us, a reversible cutting board to fit in the same place, though not fully covering.

We do this for the stove covers.  They are silicone pot holders/trivets, sold at Walmart.  One placed on across both grates with the covers over it creates a snug fit which eliminates all stove-related rattling.  The pot holders/trivets also serve their designed purpose.

We never have the covers in the storage slot when driving for fear they would rattle and possibly get damaged a little too.

We leave all the covers in place when traveling, I have made little foam wedges for each so they don't shift, rattle or pop out when we hit a pothole.
Like Ron, I have a cutting board that fits in half the sink when we are parked and love how that works. I would not go without the covers because I use the stove ones on the picnic table to hold the cloth and they also serve as hot food trivets. The sink cover I use under my propane grill so I don't burn the picnic table.

I did something similar, adding two of these little round drawer rubber bumper pads on the shared edge of one of the stove covers to make them fit tightly into the countertop.  I also labelled the back cover "BACK" so they go into their best fitting position.

If you look close, you can see them in this picture, placed on the inside edge of the rear cover.

We leave our sink and stove covers in place while traveling.  We do not hear any rattles coming from that area.  We use the covers all the time.  Having had the sink cover cut in half makes it easy to still use the sink when preparing meals and gives a nice prep area as well.  When we do need to store them they go in the storage space behind the stove top.

The bottom of the slot behind the cook top failed and I had my RV guy fix it. He asked if we ever drove with the covers in the slot. His idea was that the weight of the covers might break the bottom when we hit a bump. We just leave them in the sink and cook top.

We put some rubberized shelving material on the plywood under the mattress on the passenger side bed and put the stove and sink covers under the mattress while traveling. We can't stand the noise they make. We also had the sink cover cut in half as noted in another post. The grates for the burners are stored in the bottom drawer under the stove for the same noise problem.

Absolutely. And I leave the burner covers on I have never taken them off. Don't use the burners for anything. The micro sometimes  makes noise so now I put something in it to weight things down and it is less of a prob. Oh the silverware drawer would slide out so the dog could pick her silver for dinner on the road and we stopped that by connecting a bungee cord on top  knob and bottom and it keeps drawer in place. The noise is the slides.  Loads of noise there.. If the road is rough  you hear about it for sure. The latest adventure is the water connection valve. It was not functioning well for a while now so I told Kermit and. He sent a new valve.. No directions just the apparatus. Nice looking piece. So Jim moved the mattress up front and began to look where he would get at the back of the valve so new one can be installed. And that is tomorrow job. We are a ways from 1 year but headed in that direction. Have one tire that has been loosing air again so it goes to tire man next week before. My planned hit the road.  We have had some unusual hiccups but we find the down size to be good and are glad we have 50 amp.  Noise is nothing till we give Miss dog a empty big water bottle to chase all over with. She just loves it and it's her house so she has to be happy. Then we are too. Happy travels.. It's gotten better. Going for great.

Patricia
A new day has dawned now only traveling with Miss Elle . Jim will be watching over us.

Patricia,
The water connection valve: do you mean the one on the outside of the rig where you can connect a water hose and select where the water goes? If so, did Kermit send you the whole unit or only the part you turn to select water routing? The valve company, Anderson Brass, has a video describing how to change the part you turn at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWvEEYebwHg.

Hi HenryJ,

I am not sure this applies to your 2016, but the 6 screws on the face of the louvered plate that holds-in our microwave oven would loosen over the miles.  I would tighten them up once a year.  Last year my cousin gave me an idea to use "T" nuts of which I detailed HERE.  So far the microwave oven has stayed tight in the cabinet which has eliminated the rattling.

Another noise source for the microwaves (from at least 2013 on with household type convection oven/microwave) - the frame over the light fixture on the bottom is held by one screw and rattles. Bobby suggested I run a thin bead of silicone caulk on the loose side to hold it in place. I originally thought a screw had fallen out but it wasn't designed to have a second screw. I'm sure a single screw is fine in a house that doesn't move but the loose side does rattle a bit in an RV going down the road.

Maybe you could consider a felt pad or two in between the two metal surfaces so you can remove that piece if you need to later.

Our main TV had many such assembly conditions you describe which made it rattle up a storm.  The felt pads worked great.
