Desired 30A Cord Length?
« on: May 04, 2017, 01:38:55 pm »
Hi PC family,

I am looking to purchase a new 30A cord for my 2900 and before I purchase another 25' long cord, should I  consider a 50' cord instead?  I dont really want to carry the additional weight, and have not needed it thus far, but thought I'd ask, what you all think?  25' or 50'?

Thanks,

Rob

I bought this 30 ft cord by Marino.  I like the ends on it. It hangs better on the side of the PC and the electric box. It may cost a little more but I like it.

I've carried two 25' cords for 6 years. Needed the extra 25' only once. A total of 50' should be plenty in my opinion.

We've carried two 25' cords for 15 years.  Only used the extra 25' a few times and the last time was about ten years ago.  But, I like to know that it's available if needed.

I think 25' is enough 99% of the time.  Personally I have not seen any camp site that would need more but of course anything is possible.  That said, I would not get a 50 foot cord.  That means you are handling the 50 footer 100% of the time when you really only might need it once in a 100 times.  If you really feel you want to have the assurance of 50 feet, I would get two 25 foot cords.  Or get a new 25 footer and keep your current one as a backup in case you need both.

Anyone thinking about getting two 25' cords remember that you need one RV cord with the end with the ring for the RV and an extension cord with a female end to match the male on the RV cord.

You essentially answered your own question...you've not needed a longer cord yet.   However, we're only talking 5 lbs (or so) more weight so that isn't really an issue.  In my opinion, your best bet would be buy a 25' cord and a 25' extension.  That way, for normal use, you are "as-is" and for that rare occasion where you'll need a longer cord.. It's there.

Agreed, but please understand I've only had mine for a year now.  Many here have far more experience than I do, and that's the opinion I was seeking.  Thanks !!!

I too like the cord Tom Hanlon recommended.

If you camp in RV parks all the time, you will almost never use anything longer than 25'.

We stay most often in national parks, monuments, forests, BLMs, and state parks.  They rarely offer electricity, but when they do, the power source often calls for a cord longer than 25/30 feet.

PC's cord is 25'. One more 25' cord will do the job.
This one at Amazon has served me well for 5 years and is only $33 with free shipping.

The total length of cords must be considered especially if running the A/C as motors can be damaged if voltage drops too much.  60 feet is probably the maximum for size 10 wire if could draw near the 30A limit.

The voltage drop in a 60' run of #10 wire is only 4 volts.
A simple calculator

Never let your voltage go below 104v at the RV.
So your cord is not the problem
It's the campground.
In Mexico, I've seen them use #10 wire run hundreds of feet and have 4 RV's each trying to use 20-30 amps. This is when your voltage goes way down and a Power Management System should be used.
