best rv park in elkhart when taking delivery of coach
« on: February 04, 2017, 05:45:34 am »
would love to hear suggestions for which RV parks folks have used and liked near Elkhart for our "SHAKEDOWN CRUISE" when we take delivery. Obviously, we would like to test all the systems and still be close to the factory for next day , hopefully just a day.

Thanks

Dennis

We haven't stayed at any in Elkhart campgrounds except for once at the Elkhart Fairgrounds during an Escapees Escapade (am I being redundant?); but here is a link to RV Park Reviews, which we have found to be pretty accurate.  http://www.rvparkreviews.com/regions/indiana/elkhart    :)(:

We've never stayed in the Elkhart campground but it is the closest. People on the forum have warned the water is not good so you wouldn't be able to test that system if you choose to avoid their water.

We have stayed at several other campgrounds within a half hour of Elkhart and two that are farther away. In order of distance from Phoenix.
- Eby's Pines - we stayed in a cabin here while our slide was repaired but friends stayed near us in their Phoenix. We couldn't find a reasonably priced hotel that allowed pets so we went with a cabin. We had all the bedding and stuff on board so it was just a matter of moving the basics from the rig to the cabin. Very nice campground set back off the road with mature trees and friendly, helpful staff.
- KOA Middlebury - nice but sites are kind of close. They have a few walking trails and a pond with benches. Most of the sites are pretty open so you should get some sun... if there's any to be had.
- Shipshewana Campground North - we did our shakedown here. It was nice, decent size sites with mature evergreens on some. If it is the right season, there is a custard stand on site (huge plus for me). You can hear the highway noise at night... and the clop, clop, clop of Amish horse buggies.
- Twin Mills Campground - much farther east and large campground but well kept with nice sites.
- Potato Creek State Park - a good bit to the southwest. I don't think they have full hook ups and some of the electric posts are shared and are a good distance away from the site. We didn't have our extension cord yet so we had to switch sites to be able to hook up. We really liked the park due to the tree cover and hiking, swimming and boating opportunities. It's kind of far for the first overnight but if you want a few additional nights somewhere nice but not too far to go back, this is a good choice.

We use Allstays http://www.allstays.com/Campgrounds/Indiana-campground-map.htm You can use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom in to the Elkhart area then click each site to see what they have.

Friends have stayed at Shipshewana South and like it. This puts you very close to the shopping district in Shipshewana (Amish). Distance would place it right at Shipshewana North on the above list.

Mcd,
We stayed for 2 days at he KOA at Middlebury after we picked our PC in August.  It was very nice and the staff there were great. It worked out because we discovered a couple of problems and PC was very prompt in making repairs. Spending a few days putting the coach thru the paces is a good idea. Make sure you learn about the maceraterator it is different than other waste systems.

We have stayed at the Independ Elkhart Campground and at the KOA in Granger, we had zero problems at either and the prices were reasonable as were the showers and so forth.    I would recommend either.

We just picked up our 2017 2351 on Thursday 2/2.   We stayed at the factory on Thursday night.  They have a 30 amp connection available if no one else is using it.  We couldn't find any RV parks open this time of year.  We had also checked with the nearby Walmart before our trip and we could have stayed there.

I spent a couple of nights at the nearby RV Hall of Fame.  Boondocking, of course, so can't check all systems.  I did stay at KOA using an agreement between them and PC and experienced very rusty-colored water that even stained the fresh water valve area.  I think the water color is something inherent in the whole area.  If you watch Earl's instructional video about the macerator you will notice that the "clean" water he collects looks like very discolored.  Enjoy your new rig!!

I did a quick look on Allstays for northern Indiana and southern Michigan and found Pokagon State Park about 1 hour away - east, still in Indiana. They have a couple hundred electric sites, are open year round and some sites have 50 amp electric. I think that's it though, no full hook up and no water hook up (it was a quick look). If you plan to spend several nights in freezing weather testing systems, it would be nice to not have to run on a generator the full time. The sites are walk-in only at this time of year so I'd definitely call the park ahead of time for some idea of availability.

This park looks like a winter activity park with a tobaggon run, cross country skiing and so on.

I recommend anyone hunting sites to spend a bit of time on Allstays. There may be more options for winter pick up. I go to the state map and zoom in. Sometimes I open two state maps in different tabs in my browser so I can go back and forth between the two.
