Progressive Industries EMS in a 2552
« on: August 08, 2016, 10:25:08 pm »
I thought I had read a thread here about installing a Progressive Industries hardwired EMS in a 2552 by moving something under the passenger bed.....but, I can't seem to find the thread, now.  Anyone have any advice on where to put it and making sure it is before the transfer switch?  Thanks.

Here are the links to two previous postings on the P.I. EMS:

In our 2012 2551 I mounted our EMS under the passenger bed and connected it to the input of the breaker panel.  This is after the transfer switch.

In the 2552 all the power connections are under passenger side bed. Plywood is screwed down but just remove the screws and lift the plywood out.

You should see on the left side of the converter where the power enters. 3 - #10 wires, they go directly to the converter. It's after the transfer switch, so generator is monitored also.

On my unit, PC just moved the input terminals so the Progressive unit went between the output of the terminals and input to the converter.

Since there may not be room in your unit, see where the Progressive box can be installed. You just run the input wires of your PC to the input of the Progressive unit and the output of the Progressive unit to the Converter. Use #10 wire, stranded is easier to bend.

Then you need to run the telephone looking wire to where you want the display/override.

Shouldn't it be placed before the transfer switch?

Barry-Sue, where did you place the remote switch?

Does the constant blinking bother you?  I bother easily!  :lol

The EMS can be installed before the transfer switch (monitors only shore power) or after the transfer switch (monitors shore power and generator power).  I installed after the transfer switch so that both shore and generator power are monitored.

I did not like the constant flashing light so I mounted the monitor under the passenger bed.  I need to lift just the corner of my mattress to see the monitor but it is no big deal.  I am thinking about moving the monitor to the inside of the cabinet below the sink but it has not gone beyond the thinking stage.

I put my readout, right by the door, above the disconnect switch.

Easy to see the error or voltage looking in the door and can't see it cycling between readouts, so it doesn't bother me.

So, if I understand correctly, if you install before the transfer switch the generator is not in the loop but the transfer switch is protected, and if it is installed after, the transfer switch is not protected but the generator is?

Do you both have them installed below the passenger bed?  When I looked under there, it looked like, what keelhauler referred to as input terminals, would have to be moved over.  Is that something that can be done easily after the fact?

The EMS is designed to monitor the incoming voltage and protect the electric devices within the PC.  The transfer switch is just a relay that operates when the generator is running and does not require any type of protection.

Here is a link to the Transfer Switch Operation Manual: http://progressivedyn.com/pdfs/110538A-English.pdf

The installation can easily be done after the fact.  The 10AWG wire is stiff but is manageable.

That's why I recommend you use #10  stranded wire, it is easier to bend.

By mounting under the passenger side bed it monitors both shore power and generator power and it comes with sufficient data cable to mount the readout on the side of the sink cabinet.  With the readout in this position it is convenient to check the readout which is just inside the door.  Also the light from the readout is not annoying from the bedroom area.

Is the switch on the remote, the bypass switch?

Is the unit noisy?

Yes the switch on the remote is the bypass.

No noise of any kind.
