Might Look At 2400 Used
« on: March 30, 2016, 11:11:23 am »
Hello and thanks in advance. This is my first post outside the intro post.
I am likely looking at a 2011 2400 Ford. I am aware that it has a sofa bed only. I also saw previous posts about the air mattress I believe it has. So I know I will need to address that. I will make a case about the lack of a bedroom but it actually does not matter to me as long as the sofa can be addressed reasonably.
The other concern I have is the lower fresh tank capacity.
Are there any easy solutions to the tank issue or not?
Any other specific issues to the 2400 or the 2011 models?

I should also ask any 2400 owners here if they are happy with the coach?

It has 25000 miles and the photos looks clean.

We have a 2012 model 2400 that we bought new and has 59,000 miles. Our unit has 4 wheel drive on the E350 chassis. We have generally been very pleased with all aspects of the vehicle's performance. Our sofa bed has the memory foam construction and is very comfortable. The only nuisance is the nightly ritual of preparing the bed and morning stowing of bedding. We looked at the 2350 but did not like the fixed location and size of the bed. We will be selling our unit later this spring but we have many great memories of our travels and camping experiences. And as many others have testified on this site, the people at Phoenix are very supportive and helpful to theownersof their motorhomes.

I'm not a 2400 owner, but will take a stab at your question about the fresh tank capacity.  It probably depends on the type of camping you do.  Lots and lots of people hook up to fresh water when they get a site, in which case, their FW tank capacity is sort of a mute point.  Personally, I always operate off of my tanks, even if W hookup is available.  For one person, my 38 gallons gets me two weeks when I act conservatively.  Then its no big deal to simply fill up the tank when I'm at a campground with water.  Hope that helps, at least a little!

Edit:  I just realized that my response may be misleading without giving you more info.  I am able to go two weeks before filling up the FW tank largely because I use campground showers and drink bottled water.  I am only using the FW tank for toilet flushes and dish washing.  So I'm using 2g or so per day (6g is in the water heater and not counted towards the 38g total).

Hi PC Looking,

We have a 41 gallon fresh water tank in our 2007 2350 and we've been vacationing without hook-ups 100% of the time.  My wife and I do very well with that amount of fresh water.  In fact we do very well with our PC period.  Sure more of everything would be better yet, but then we'd be driving around in a monster diesel pusher.

We've owned our PC since new (9 years now) and like many others here, I have been making little improvements along the way to make it work even better for us.....admittedly I am running out of ideas  :)

You mentioned that you were considering a 2011.  All I can say is that Phoenix seems to make little improvements in subsequent model years.  So other than "personal preference", I can say with confidence.....The Newer The Better.....and a 2011 is so very close to a new 2016.

Thanks Ron. I agree with what you said it is just that the 2400 has a 31 gallon tank I believe and that is the lowest of any RV I have looked at. But I guess for just me it should work. Ironically the only major contender for my money other than the PC has a 60 gallon tank. I guess that is over kill.

Thank you Carol. I appreciate your explaining that further. I am hearing about the same from most who use the showers at sites. I hope to do some boon docking and as I told Ron it is a 31 gallon tank. I agree I should be able to make that work most often. But your reassurance is helpful as I am only forum educated to this point, a real green horn.

Hmm, I did not realize the 2400 had only 31 gallons of fresh water.  It would not hurt to give the factory a call to see if they can bump it up by some amount for you.  You might have to loose something else to gain more water.  Be sure to understand the trade-off.

An alternative would be to carry extra water in another container for your waste tanks can handle it.  But then you'll need to store something like this, preferably up front to distribute weight better.

We have carried one of these for ten years.  Since we use National Forest campgrounds much of the time, we refill it often at hand pumps and please notice the large opening to fill it.  I have pulled this down many gravel and dirt roads and paths for all those years and the wheels have proven to be remarkably durable.  Eight gallons is a lot and the container is well made in Canada.....probably the reason it has lasted so long as compared to cheap Asian products.  I slip it empty into a plastic garbage sack and store it in the shower when in transit.  Here is the math:  70 (years old) plus 70 (pounds of filled container) equals ....wheels!

By the way, I have a small sheet of dense foam that was a packaging protection piece when I ordered our Renogy solar panels for the PC.  I cut it to size and use the piece on the bottom of the shower to protect the shower pan.  We carry large fold up camping chairs stored in plastic garbage sacks in the shower as well.   Works well for us and the bags protect the shower walls.

Also sold by Walmart in their camping stuff area in many large super centers.

I love that compact 8 gallon water cart Doneworking Paul.  Fashion a small 12V pump somehow and then nothing heavy ever gets picked up.  Thanks for sharing that.

Here it is for click-free viewing.

Ron said: Fashion a small 12V pump somehow and then nothing heavy ever gets picked up.  Thanks for sharing that.

That is exactly what I do.  My first pump was a simple small marine bilge pump from Academy for about $15.  I cemented a hose connection to the discharge and added a 20 foot electric cord to the wires and put alligator clips on them.  Then, simply hook it up to the batteries when I wanted to pump out my wheelie tank into the RV tank and use my rv hose, drop it in the tank and pump.   That was with our Roadtrek.  Now, I have this:

http://www.amazon.com/Docooler-Diesel-Transfer-Submersible-Stainless/dp/B00F2LANF4/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1459447409&sr=8-7&keywords=12v+submersible+pump

It works even better.  I use a 3/4 inch by six foot piece of vinyl clear tubing (Lowes or HD, about $3 or $4).   With this arrangement we can really pump water!   Since we boondock mostly in the National Forests in the Southwest and West, they allow grey water to be dripped because the forest appreciates the moisture and it is really just recycling the water.  So, with grey water not a storage problem and the extra large black tank of a PC2350 we are good to camp without moving for quite a while.

And so there we now have an ultimate "affordable" boondock extending solutionsolution from professor D.W.P.

Thanks for sharing.  When Irene and I plan to boondock for an extended period next time, I will run out beforehand and prepare us properly.
