Hershey, Pa starting this Wednesday through next Sunday. Your profile doesn't say what part of the country you are in.

Sorry, I am in northeast Ohio and unfortunately can't make it to Hershey this year.  I was hoping for something in the midwest in the winter or spring.

Thanks!

Hi Kristi,
In the greater scheme of things, you're not all that far away from the PC factory in Elkhart, Indiana.  Lots of other RV manufacturers in that area, too.  You could tailor-make your own RV show/tour minus the crazy crowds.  Plus, factory tours are fun!  ;)

We have actually been to the Phoenix Cruiser facility in Elkhart, just about a year ago.  Very impressive and PC is at the top of our short list.  At the time we went, we were only able to see the 3100 but since that time we have decided to try to stay under 30 feet for ease of access to more state and national parks.  I was interested in seeing a 2552 to get a feel for how the living area felt compared to the 3100.  Since we wont be buying til sometime next year, I have plenty of time - but after doing so  much research and seeing so many photos, it is so nice to go into the actual units

Kristi,

My opinion here.

If your travels will primarily focus on "Out West" national parks, monuments, forests, BLMs, state parks and such as we do, you will want to stay as short as possible.  Our 2350 is 23'-8" long and we get around in those places very well.  I would advise not to get too much longer than that if you want to utilize the aforementioned parks.  Try to limit yourself to 26 feet, maybe adding only a few inches more if you have to.  Unfortunately a 2552 is just about 28 feet long and will get challenging for some national parks and such post a 25' length limit in their camp grounds and on some roads so keep that in-mind.  If you decide to ignore the limits, you could find yourself unable to handle turns and curves without backing up and repositioning.

I would also suggest to consider towing a car, ideally a rough & tough vehicle such as a 4 wheel drive something for there are many primitive roads in those parks where such a vehicle gets well utilized.  I would never consider driving our shorter PC on those roads so if we did not have our Jeep Liberty 4x4 with us, we would have missed out on so much those places offer.

I hope the others don't misunderstand my point here.  I don't feel the longer models are poor choices, but rather they serve much better for a different style of travel & destination.

We haven't hit all the parks out west but we spent a year and a half wandering full time in our 2552 with no problem driving the roads or fitting into a campsite. I will admit some of the roads with tight turns take more concentration but we could do it without any problems. There will be places we can't take our Phoenix and we'll route around those then visit the sites in the Subaru we tow. We are temporarily grounded to help with our granddaughter but you can see a lot of our campsite pictures and travel descriptions on our blog listed below. We kept a journal and will be posting our whole first year as soon as we motivate ourselves. (Hey, we're retired and lazy. It took a while but we learned to slow down, sometimes too slow).

Most sites are longer than the posted length and we are able to not only fit the rig but park the Subaru across the front. We've even backed into a standard parking space that had room for us to hang our tail back over the grass. We fit as well as those extended bed trucks that way.

We also noticed a lot of the parks, both state and national, are upgrading their campgrounds so many of the sites are being enlarged. The RV population is growing and those campgrounds bring much needed income.

So the size of the RV you are most comfortable with is based on how you will use it. We needed more space and storage (and a bigger bathroom) than the 2350 offered and more payload than the larger models offered. For us, the 2552 is the sweet spot.

I am new to the forum.  My partner and I bought a 2552 last fall and we have taken it out a few times.  We are researching what type of dinghy vehicle to buy.  I noticed that you mentioned you tow a Subaru.  Do you flat tow it?  We have an Outback but we didn't think we could tow it because it is all wheel drive.  Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated

Hi Elaine,

Welcome to the PC forum!

Regarding flat-towing your Outback.  There are two things to look into.

1) Call the general Subaru customer service number and ask to speak with technical support.  When you get connected to the right person, ask if you can flat tow your specific model Outback behind a motor home.

2) Search the internet for suppliers of tow bars and related, like Roadmaster and Blue Ox as a couple of examples.  If they make the hardware to connect your Outback to a tow bar, then you have a chance.  Subaru might tell you it is okay to do, but you surely need the permanently-mounted hardware to mount a tow bar.

Some vehicles, one model with a particular 4-wheel-drive option could be flat towed, while another model might not.  Our Jeep Liberty 4x4 has a transfer case, a separate shift lever to select 2-wheel-drive, 4-wheel-drive-high, neutral, and 4-wheel-drive-low.  The same Liberty which is not a 4x4 (a 2-wheel-drive without that transfer case) is officially not allowed to be flat-towed.  When we tow our Liberty, the transfer case must be in neutral, but the regular gear selector with P-R-N-D-2-1 must be in park to prevent the automatic transmission from moving while being towed.

Well wishes in your research.  I seem to recall seeing a couple of Outbacks being flat-towed, so maybe you have a chance.

We tow our all wheel drive 2014 Subaru Forrester four wheels down. It was listed in Motor Home Magazine's Dinghy towing guide and the user manual said it could be towed but the salesmen wasn't sure so we checked directly with Subaru and they confirmed that it could be flat towed. We do not need any height adjustment for the hitch going to the Phoenix. There is no limit to the speed you can tow it at. You do not need to stop every few hours and run through the gears.

We hook up the hitch, take off the emergency brake, turn off the display screen (to save battery), put the car in neutral, turn the key to "accessory" and away we go. With both of us doing our part, we can hitch up, set the car and roll out in under 5 minutes including hooking safety and electrical cables. We love it!

We also had the SMI braking system installed and it works well.

We did have problems getting the base plate and hitch assembly but that is because we bought one of the first of the totally redesigned Forrester model. Demco had not designed a plate to fit the car yet and we waited months with no luck, so we have a hybrid. I believe our hitch is Demco but our base plate is Blue Ox. We had to pay extra for adapters for the connection from hitch to base plate to make them match. Our base plate "pegs" have two "fingers" and our hitch arms (with the adapters) have three fingers. The two fingers are held securely between the three fingers when towing. I believe if we had had a straight Demco set up, it would have been one finger on the arms held between the two on the baseplate. I don't know if what we have is better, but it was such a pain getting it all straight that I tell myself it is. I figure it is harder to bend or break those two fingers than it would be with a single one. I assume the standard setups for either brand work well together. Our RV mechanic just preferred the Demco hitch. So, I recommend checking around to see who will be installing your towing system and ask them for recommendations and explanations as to why they chose one over the other. If you are doing the install yourselves, then the internet as Ron suggested and other RV'ers are your information source.

As far as length of the RV and campsite size, I would love to have a unit that will fit in all the national and state park campgrounds, but since my husband and I plan to travel pretty much full time for the first couple of years after he retires, I feel we need more room for living space and storage than what you get in a 23 or 24 foot RV.  I think the 2552 is big enough to provide what we need but yet small enough to fit in a good number of parks.  Probably why that model is (I believe) their best seller.
