Water pump flexible hose on 2552

Water pump flexible hose on 2552

Has anyone installed flexible hose on the 2552 water pump? There is no room, really, to attach hoses to our pump and no place to move the pump to, at least in my humble opinion. Does anyone have a photo of such a modification? Who did the work; you, an RV repair place, or a real plumber?

John and Carol,
    The paperwork that comes with the pump says to install a flexible line between the pump and the pressure side, or output side, of the pump.  This eliminates pulsing feedback through the plumbing.  When I read this on our first PC, I had the factory install the flex line on our 2552, which was the first 2552 produced.  See attached photo.  You can see the short flex line.

Bob, on our 2552 that side of the pump is the inlet, not the outlet. The outlet is under the black drain pipe. We have flexible hose, but it is attached to the fresh water tank and connects to Pex tubing that goes to the 4-way switch on the driver's side exterior wall. Not exactly what SHURflo specifies. The pump outlet connects directly to a T which connects to Pex going forward to the kitchen and rearward to the bathroom. There is no room to add flexible hose to the outlet.  >(

     I can not verify the other side of the pump as I do not have that coach now.  I did check my current 2551 and the flex line is on the inlet side, not where it was supposed to go.  The outlet side is rigid.

To be honest, I have not paid much  attention to it because we have not been able to use the coach.  We are involved in the Estate of our neighbor, which will take most of the year, so no motor home use for awhile.  Seeing as the freeze weather is over, I will check to see if I have any water in the system and operate the pump and check for noise.

I have a 2015, 2551, and at least on my PC, both inlet and outlet lines at the pump are flexible....and we still have a "noisy" pump.  I actually take comfort in that...at least I know the pump is working!

In our 2007 2350, I installed a 2 gallon pressure tank.  I used a standard house-hold braided stainless steel water line (similar to the kind used for a faucet) for the connection between the high pressure side of the water pump and the pressure tank.  The pump noise changed from a loud groan to a quiet hum because the vibration of the pump could not transfer to the RV plumbing.

Here is a picture of my primitive installation.  I am not proud of it, but it does work extremely well.  Unfortunately you don't see the braided stainless steel line between pump and tank for it is behind them.


Now that I know better, I would have installed THIS ONE for $105 plus cost of shipping, and cleanly mount the pump on top to gain a little more outdoor storage compartment space.

Don, Kermit doesn't believe the flexible hose would work for us either. Your experience proves him right. Again.

Ron, I like that 2 gallon tank, if it will fit. We have far less room than you do. Thanks for the idea.

My pump is a Pentair Shurflo Revolution (model 4008, 3gpm). It has always been a bit noisy, but that bothersome yet since we haven't used the pump all that much, but plan to soon.  It does not have flexible hose on one side, and on the other side, there is flex hose, but not connected directly to the pump.  I purchased all the 'stuff' needed to change out hoses, etc, to comply with the recommended Pentair/Shurflo instructions for installation, which are:

"Use flexible high-pressure hose on the pump inlet and outlet [such as SHURFLO Kit 94-591-01]. The pumps ports and strainer should not be connected to plastic or rigid pipe, or the pump's normal motion will transmit through rigid plumbing causing noise, and possibly loosening or cracking components."

The manual also says that to reduce noise, the pump should be mounted as close to the water tank as possible.

If I ever get around to doing the mod, I'll post results.

My PC is a 2100, not a 2552, so my water pump is under my bathroom sink and very accessible.  However, I also was shocked at the noise which sounded like a jackhammer from the original pump installation which did not include the specified flexible hose on both pump inlet and outlet.  I asked PC to modify the installation to match the manufacturer's recommendations, which they did.  The noise level is now acceptable.  Not what you would call quiet, but a tremendous improvement.

Looking at your plumbing, I wonder if long braided stainless hoses would be more effective at reducing the noise.  Since you have so much plumbing already, two coiled braided stainless hoses would feel right at home.  I would use the ones sold for laundry machine hook-up, but shorter than pictured.

We have a 2012 2552, and I installed a tank similar to Ron's (in fact I got the idea from Ron when we had a 2350).  I made a mounting bracket to hold the tank above the pump and next to the bathroom wall under the bed since there's not much room under there.  The tank keeps the pump from cycling on/off constantly while using water and results in a quieter operation.

We had the good folks at Auburn RV install some high pressure flexible hose on the inlet and outlet of the fresh water pump and now the pump is almost quiet. We can just barely hear a buzz when it is running. Here is a picture of how crowded it is where the pump is mounted.



You can see the hose from the water tank coming from the left going to the rear of the PC. The PEX line from the four-way valve comes from the rear (on the right in the photo) and connects to the pump inlet. Next is a photo of the new installation.



The pump has been moved to the right slightly to gain access to the outlet. Now there is flexible hose on the inlet side. The new hose on the outlet goes to the T that used to be connected to the outlet.



In this photo you can see the T and the hose returning from the four-way valve. The return hose is crimped but the mechanic says there is still plenty of volume. The water flow does not seem to be affected. We are very happy with this.
