Help. TV/DVD, under kitchen sink and GCFI not working.
« on: November 29, 2014, 06:55:09 pm »
This morning while running the A/C heat strip, a small room heater and making coffee my wife plugs her hair dryer into the bathroom  GFCI and turns it on. She popped the 30 amp circuit breaker under the passengers bed. Now the Tv/DVD, the plug in the right over head cabinet that they plug into does not work on 110v. Also the plug under the kitchen sink and the bathroom plug do not work On 110 v. When I turn on the inverter, the Tv/DVD both work., but the sink and the bothroom plugs still don't work.I have reset all the breakers in the converter and even replaced the GFCI. All the other plug work.

    What am I missing?

Here is a link to a wiring diagram for the PC.  This might help.

Basically the same thing happened to me last week.  I finally reset the GFCI after trying everything.  Everything worked.  Maybe a bad second GFCI?

The orignal GFCI the light would not come on after the breaker popped, even after trying to reset it. That is why I replaced it. The new one a yellow light comes on.

The hardware store I went to is run by the Amish and they don't use electricty and only had the one GFCI.

If I am reading the diagram correctly, which is not my strong suit, it looks like the line to the GFCI goes to the TV, the kitchen and the outside. Right now none of them are working, so I may have gotten a bad replacement. Tomorrow I will get another one after I get home.
Thank you Barry and Keelhauler for the information.

Tom, electricians on commercial projects in which I am sometimes involved tell me that GFI failure "right out of the box" is not that uncommon these days.  One guy told me he had two in a row bad from the box.  The third time was charm.  So, it certainly is possible you got a bad replacement.

Tom,
I am sure by now you are aware of the  amperage you were drawing when you had this failure.  All the items you were using at the same time are heating elements and draw a lot of power.  They probably fried the GFI and if a second replacement does not work, I would look for some overheated wires.  You should have tripped the 30 Amp breaker because of the amperage draw.  Just a quick computation indicates you were drawing possibly over 40 amps.  I don't have my coach available right now or I would look to see what else could be causing your problem.  Normally the GFI is there to detect a current differential, not an overloaded condition unless the GFI is of the in line circuit breaker type.  Curious to see what you find, but I would look for some overheated wires.

Tom,

I am not sure I got the facts straight, but I'll just throw this out there.

Are you on shore power or running the generator?  If running the generator, maybe the main breaker on your generator tripped, or maybe something is quirky with your power transfer switch.  My generator breaker tripped and I had forgotten about that one....a senior moment.

One other thing.  You might want to examine the dead outlets, one-by-one.  Given how they are wired inside with that spring action, you might want to examine each one for burn marks inside.  The first in the chain might be the culprit.

Ron I was on shore power when the breaker tripped. Tomorrow I will get another GFCI and try it. I did not know my wife was about to start using the hair dryer when I started the coffee maker, with every thing else going on. Most of the plugs work except those on the GFCI. The Tv works on the inverter, so I am thinking, there he goes again thinking, it is the GFCI.

I just tried it running the generator and got the same results.

This morning I went to dump before heading home and another problem occured. The gray water dump valve runs, I can hear it, but it does not open the valve. I had to pull it open in order to dump. So now I have two repairs to make.

Sir  When you reinstalled the GFI check  the incoming wires (hot)   are on the right screws. The others go on the feed thru
screws. It is easy mess up.

Ok I got the GCFI replaced and working this time. I went to the hardware store and got another GCFI and put it in. It still did not work, so I called Kermit and he walked me through testing to see if it was the GCFI and how to wire it properly. I had the hot wires and the load wires backward. I had the white on the silver screws and the black on the bass crews which is correct but with the two wires backward it would not work.
Thank you for all your help on this.

This afternoon I will look into the Auto Drain on the gray tank and see how hard it will be to replace the gear. It is a nice 65 degrees outside today, so a good day to take it apart. When I get the part it will probly be freezing. If I screw this up, I can always order a new one from Carol at the factory. >(

So WHITE=HOT???  BLACK+GROUND???  I can see how you got it backwards as that is not the way a house is wired.  White at home is always ground.  But I suppose BLACK=GROUND on the battery terminals so that must get carried throughout the rig then.

I learned something here.

That is certainly good info to have and remember.  Incidentally, since rememberiing becomes more challenging for me each year I make it a habit to take pictures with my IPhone of everything I am working on before I start taking stuff apart.  That way, I can have the "before" pics right there and can enlarge them on the screen to see what I need to see and remember.  The resolution of these camera phones really is great these days.

When my wife wants me to pick up some replenishable item at the store I take a picture of the old one's box or case or bottle so I can get the very same thing.  Then, I just delete the pictures after I get home and She Who Must Be Obeyed is satisfied and approves that I done good hithere
