Protection & Convenience
« on: October 25, 2014, 01:06:50 am »
Last summer we had a grill guard installed on our PC. The motivation was more than a couple close calls with moose and caribou up here and deer while traveling thru Ohio and Pennsylvania. While searching for a grill guard we kept looking for side steps. Our PC is four wheel drive and a good 6-8 inches more ground clearance than a standard PC, that makes getting in and out of the cab a challenge. We also wanted a rear bumper to offer a little additional protection when backing up or when parking on ferries. We couldn't find anything commercially available in spite of hour upon hour of searching the internet and talking to a bunch of truck/van customizers. Finally I stopped into a couple of local boat builders who pointed me to a local weld shop. We met with the young owner and explained what we wanted. He specializes in working with aluminum. Both the sidesteps and bumper in the attached photos are made with aluminum plate so they are light weight but very strong. We left it up to him to come up with the design. We are very pleased with the results.

Looks perfect for your needs, he did a nice job on design and welding.  I wish I had a bumper on the back when I accidentally backed into my Jeep when trying to reposition in a camp spot, long story, luckily not much damage.

Very nice for a high-stance PC 4x4.  The rear bumper could be trouble with our regular 2350 pulling out from gas stations and such.  The rear hitch gets close as it is.

Nice work there!

This is what will go on the front of our 2552 4x4 PC, https://www.aluminess.com/ford/ford-vans-2008-2013/ford-van-08-13-front-bumper/ it is all aluminum and powder coated black. Weighs 80 lbs.
Can you share the contact info for the shop that built the your custom rear bumper? He may still have the dimensions and be able to build us one and ship it to us.

I don't know the name.  I do know that the front bumper cover we paid extra for was also used by other RV manufactures.  It was not a Phoenix-Exclusive item.  I imagine Phoenix could give you the name.....maybe even sell you one if they have one lying around collecting dust.
