Finally the shade project is completed.  What an ordeal.  I only semi-regret my choice (was fully regretting it during assembly).  I really wanted to build something nice, but code wouldn't let me put up anything that was not "temporary".  Not sure now temporary 1000 lbs of steel bolted to the concrete is, but ok, it's done.  Now to give the PC a nice bath and back it in...maybe tomorrow.  Right now I'm cooked.

A very affordable and effective alternative to indoor parking.   2o2  Just make sure it is well anchored, maybe installing those floatation noodles around the piping that might make contact with the rig on a very windy day.  Just slit them then wrap the pipes.

Ron, I have it well bolted to the concrete, 6" square footpads with 4 lags in each of the 8 legs.  The pipe is 1-7/8" schedule 40 steel, so it can't flex more than an inch in any direction.  It's 30'x16' and about 13' high, so lots of clearance if I park it on target.

Ann, suggest you still use the tire covers if you hadn't already decided  to continue with them. At least this will keep it mostly out of the sun which is the big killer of sealant and paint, (and tires)

That sounds great!

But...

Something inside me says it would be good to reinforce the frame better.  I am thinking  of an "X" cross brace on the back wall and center sections of the side walls, made of conduit.  This to prevent the structure from twisting in a bad storm.  Flatten & drill the ends of electrical conduit for bolting.  The "X" does not have to go across the entire wall.  Just inside the center sections and back wall,  and a small horizontal cross brace up high between adjacent walls.  The intersection of conduits that make the "X's" you could flatten & add a bolt there too.  It would surely stiffen up the structure.

Maybe I am over-engineering it, but I fear that gusty 60 mph winds could mess up your rig.  Check the website of the manufacture of the canopy.  They might offer an additional kit to do this very thing.

I just browsed the web but did not find an example.  Maybe my idea is not commonly practiced at all.

Ron, actually the back wall would be a good place for some cross bracing, as I have enclosed the end anyway...I hadn't thought of that, as I rejected the idea of bracing in the roof, but didn't think about the end.  Thanks for the idea.  I'm pretty confident in the unit, but the cross bracing is worth looking into.  I also tend to over-engineer things, which is why I doubled the size/gauge of the steel that they initially specified for our wind zone.  I had a similar but one-third smaller unit over my E-350 van at our previous residence and it stood through five hurricanes up to 90mph steady winds...it was half the size/gauge and was only held to the ground with nylon rope and stakes...did get a few small tarp punctures from debris, but it stood.  Of course, if the trees start coming down, I just need to be lucky and have good insurance.  Better yet, pack up and go  :lol

You sure have a lot more time with temporary shelters than me.  I am glad you are confident with your heavy duty flavor.  Cross brace or not, your decision is based from lots of extreme weather experiences.  I feel better for your decision, knowing that now about you.

How I envy you. The snow-load here would kill that instantly (we had 4 feet of snow on the roof and I was watching the ceiling like a hawk).

John,
I bought the fittings, tarp and bungies from creativeshelters.com.  They have a design feature on the site that lets you create a "kit" that meets your desired shelter dimensions and configuration, then gives a diagram and cut list for the metal fence tubing that you will buy from a local fencing company.  My local fence company cut each piece to exact size for me.  There are many choices on the site for different tarps, and different configurations.  The shelter I created is a 16' x 30', made with the largest/heaviest fittings/tubing (1 7/8"), with the medium gable peak (110 deg slope, 4" rise/foot), and the heaviest/most sunblocking gray tarp.

I'm happy with the quality of the finished tent, and expect the tarp and bungies to need replacement between 5-10 years.  However, it was a bear to assemble because of the extreme weight...four big men had quite a struggle.  I strongly prefer a metal carport type structure, but the zoning restriction would not allow it.  In hindsight I actually wish I would have ignored the zoning and built the metal structure and taken the 5% chance that anyone would have noticed or cared.

Nice!  We are south and east of you on the coast, and needing to build such a structure. Similar zoning restrictions also.  >(
