Question on mixing tow bar and tow plate manufacturers
« on: August 04, 2013, 05:51:16 pm »
We bought a 2014 Subaru Forester to use as a Toad. We are happy with the car but didn't realize it would be so hard to get a tow plate for it. Apparently there was a total reworking of the front end for 2014 so the suppliers have to get their hands on a Forester to design and fabricate a tow plate for it. Our tow guy was going to put a Delco tow plate and Delco tow bar on our rig. Now we can't get the Delco tow plate (no clue why, Delco told our guy they would have it by early July but no joy there) so he said he can get a tow plate from Blue Ox but then he needs to install a Demco Tow Bar to Blue Ox Base Plate Adapter. It's only another $81.00 so we aren't worrying about the cost (comparatively speaking with the rest of the money to hitch this thing up) but it is potentially one more part to go wrong. Does anybody have experience with such a thing?

John

If you have not already purchased the Demco Tow Bar you might want to consider going with a Blue Ox  tow bar.  I have used one for 8 years and it has performed flawlessly.

It looks like Demco has a wide selection of adapteres and I don't see any reason why an adapter supplied by Demco would cause any problems.  Hopefully it would replace the attachment points on the tow bar with Blue Ox compatible attachment points.

Holly, You might want to call Camping World ask for an estimate from them before going with your current estimate. Last week I saw the SMI system installed in a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it was real nice. Nothing to do inside, just hook up and go. For full timing it might be a better system. He had it installed along with the tow bar & plate at Camping World in Hanover, Pa.

Did you get your noise and counter top fitted?

I recently purchased a Roadmaster tow bar and when I went to have the CRV plates installed they did not have the right plates. They said it would be cheaper to install BO plates and get an adapter between the tow bar and plate. I see no problem with this scenario at all. Can't speak to the Demco.

Can't speak to the Demco.

I have used Demco baseplates on three toads with no problems. This does not address your problem, but on two occasions I have asked Demco for their assistance on solving a problem and they have gone the extra mile. I can't see where a Demco adapter and towbar wouldn't do the job, but as mentioned it seems the BlueOx towbar would be the cheaper fix. Regardless either solution should work just fine. Good luck on whichever you choose!
It's not that I'm insensitive, it's probably that I just don't care. ;)

We decided to go with the Demco tow bar and Blue Ox base plate with the adaptors as recommended by the hitch guy. I was concerned we were adding additional parts to fail but the adaptor replaces a piece on the Demco tow bar so no additional parts or rattles. It actually looks like it will be a better join since the adaptor has three tabs interlocking with two on the base plate as opposed to the standard Demco one tab interlocking with two.

To answer Tom: No, we still have the noise. Ford says we have to wait for their regional repair guy to look at but they didn't call before we left for our 3.5 week trip and we are in crunch mode now trying to clear the house before our new tenants move in on August 27th. If we can get ourselves organized enough, we may try to book into the Ford dealer and repair shop that Phoenix uses in Mishawaka, Indiana. We will be up that way for the rally/reunion and could hit it on the way back down with a bit of a detour, but at least it will be going to someone that knows the RV.

As for the countertop - Phoenix DID replace it and did a very nice job. We had to return because they swapped the hot and cold water and the sprayer was leaking. Poor Bobby had to wedge himself under the sink and swap the hookups. In another post Ron Ditmer talks about how difficult it is to work in the tight space under the sink. Ron was correct as Bobby confirmed that the faucet hook ups are all attached prior to mounting the countertop at the faucet.
