slide problems

slide problems

While cleaning i noticed the wearing of my slide and the rubber falling apart. The factory screws are causing the problem. I replaced these screws with a flush mount counter sunk type. I hope this takes care of the problem. I remember what my dad told me, he should have followed the, "7 P's" I might not had this problem.

Thanks for the tip, Billy.  My seal was also worn by the raised screw heads where the slide was tightest.  I replaced them with flat head screws, I did all the screws just to be sure that another spot might start to wear.  Couldn't get to the center one on the top because of the topper.  Interesting to note that the holes were already countersunk for flat head style screws so the new ones fit flush.

Strange, I needed to do my own countedsink?
I will try to do as many on the top as I can. My last name (Schmall) pretty much tells u my height. roflol (WH) roflol

 What type flat head screws did you use, and what size? Did you use silicon caulk?

There were #8 and I used a #10. First started with SS Countersunk flat head. SS is not a strong head and being oversize they would strip the Philips head,  About the last 6-8 I used zink, if they rust I will replace them. It was necessary to countersink mine. You could drill the hole to a#9 then use the larger screw or just use the #8. I am a little on the wired side :help me!

I followed Billy's example and replaced most of my screws behind the slide. I found that #8 1" SS worked for me. I started by using brass but way to soft and striped four of them so bad I can not get them back out. I did not have any problems with the SS screws. I could not reach under the slide's awning so they are still the original screws.

Thanks--Billy, Bob and Tom. Another project now that I've got my cabinet complete.

I think I will use silicone caulk with the SS #8's.

I used #8 - 1" long flat head zinc plated steel screws.  I like the strength of the steel vs brass or sst for this application.  If  I see any sign of rust on the screw heads, I will apply white paint.  I have been on the road for three weeks with lots of rain and no rust yet.  Also, look around the RV and see how many other screws are zinc plated steel with no problems.  I don't think silicone sealer will be necessary as the existing sealing material under the flange squeezes out under the flat head screw.  My 2010 had countersunk holes, if you have drill the countersink then you might need some sealer.

We replaced ours with #8 Stainless flathead and put a dab of silicone on the tip of the screw before screwing it in.  Couldn't reach the ones under the awning.  The old screws were chewing the rubber on the slide.  The flatheads so far are working great.  Anne and Bob

I have found young teenagers fit well underneath the awning to change those screws.  Send a responsible young grandchild who thinks the world of his grandpa up there to do the change out.
