We have decided not to head to Acadia this year but instead we have decided to check out Gettysburg, PA on our way to DC.

We are in MA now and will stay here until the 27th and then head toward Gettysburg stopping at Promised Land State Park to check out the new Pickerel Point Campground there. We have made reservations at Coduros (sp) State Park in Hanover PA for 3 nights. Plan on heading to Gettysburg for a day trip. Is there anything else that we should see while in the area?

The next stop is Cherry Hill Campground for 5 nights. That will give us plenty of time to see what we haven't seen in DC. Then on home!

Any suggestions of what to see would be helpful.

I don't have a map in front of me to reference the campgrounds you mentioned, but two of my favorite civil war sites are just south of Gettysburg and kinda on the way to DC.  The first is the Antietam battleground.  It is the opposite of Gettysburg.  There are few marble monuments and the battleground has been preserved much as it looked in the civil war days. It's very moving to get out and stroll through the fields and envision what happened there.  The other place is Harper's Ferry, WV, just down the road south from Antietam.  The town has been preserved so you can see what it looked like when John Brown attacked it.  There is also an overlook over the confluence of two rivers that Thomas Jefferson described as the most beautiful sight in America.  I've been there many times and don't get tired of seeing it.  Hope you have a good trip.

In Gettysburg, stop at the new visitors center first, see the movie then go touring. stop here during your travels http://www.roundbarngettysburg.com/. IT"S apple time.
Also you may want to stop in Intercourse, Pa  and Bird-in-hand, Pa. on your way down from Mass. Amish country with buggy's and great food.

Hi
You are not to far from us and if we could we would try to hook up with you but, we SOLD our house  and are busy packing every thing up to head for Florida.  We will store our furniture for now and ship it down when we find a house down there.  We will be in Camp Venice on Oct 15 so will keep in touch with you.  Looking forward to camping with you guys and Barry and Sue in January.

If you do decide to go through Pennsylvania Dutch Country, you might want to consider seeing the Strasburg Railroad and Museum.  They have tons of vintage steam trains, one of which was used in "Hello Dolly" for the rail trip down from Yonkers.  They run round trips to Paradise and back.  I've taken this and it's a lot of fun.

In Gettysburg ... the Dobbin House Tavern ... http://www.dobbinhouse.com/

There is plenty in and around Gettysburg for a few days of sight seeing.

In nearby York ... Harley-Davidson factory tour, among others.  Lesser known but York was our nation's capital briefly so there are a few historic buildings in downtown.  Nothing like Gettysburg ...

Lots of golf courses in York county too.

I grew up in that area and still visit family around there.

Thanks to Tom Hanlon and Brown Crew. While in Gettysburg, we finally found the Round Barn and we had lunch at the Dobbins Tavern. We spent 3 days in Gettysburg and thoroughly enjoyed it. Could have spent another day but on to DC we went!

Wasn't too impressed with the tour of the Utz potato chip factory. Cape Cod chips has a better tour of the plant (guess I'm prejudiced)

Judi,
We are home.   Seeing Devin in Pensacola was great.  The campground at Fort Pickings was very nice & the daily showers refreshing.  Natchez Trace a great drive & Amanda's sun shades very useful, especially in Vicksburg.  The Mississippi Creek has very wide beaches.

As Devin is the Forever & Always Grad Program, I'm quite sure we will be back to Fl in the future.  NOT IN THE SUMMER, please :-D ;)
