Beartooth Mountains MT

I wanted to comment that i just drove over the Beartooth Mountains on highway 212 driving our 2551 (E450), did not pull the Fit this time, but bride followed.

While the highway rises about 5,500 feet from Redlodge in about 18 miles and is a series of switchback, had not problem, traveled at about 35 to 45 and keep RPMs in range of 2800 to 3200.

I had read on some sights that this was a road that might want to be avoided. We stayed at the Island Lake campground and had a great weekend. It would be a shame to miss such a spectacular site.

We did Beartooth 2 years ago and had no problem either.
Charles Kuralt tagged it as the most scenic drive in America.
Beautiful.
Carry on, regardless..................

In the end of August 2010 we drove to Red Lodge, spent the night and started up the Beartooth hwy only to find a sign saying the road was closed 12 miles ahead. Went to the visitors center and they said it snow last night and didn't know when the road would reopen. Told us how to get to Cody, Wy and then take the Chief Joseph hwy to Cooke City and on to Yellowstone.  It was a great ride with real nice roads. We camped in Gardiner, Mt for the labor day weekend. The next day we found out the Beartooth had reopened two hours later. We drove our Jeep up to the Top of the World store and back. Very pretty. Someday I hope to do the full Beartooth Hwy.

Us too.  Last year we traveled the Bear tooth in our 2350 without a toad. We had the same results.

We also loved the bighorn mountain area.  Hope to get back there someday.
