Bathroom shelfDW
« on: August 02, 2020, 08:32:08 pm »
DW would like a shelf added in the bathroom of our 2351D. I can make the shelf, match the decor, etc but not sure how to mount it to the wall. How thick are the walls? Don't want to drive a couple of screws into the wall and have them pertrude through the outside skin. Really don
t want to use those 3M Command thingies. Your thoughts?
Jack is what we call our PC 2351D, and he has taken us from campers to RV'ers and loving it. We're no longer Team Bob. Just Jack the RV!

I added a few shelves in our 2350 bathroom.  I used deep-thread, deep-bite wood screws, but I pre-drilled the holes large enough so the screws would not crumble the tempered hard board.  The holes are drilled a tiny bit larger than the inside diameter of the threads on the screws.

As far as the shelving I installed........

We roll up and store our bath towels in this rack mounted above the toilet.  It works well.  The towels are pressure-fit and don't fall out.  The towels in the picture don't reflect actual usage.

I made a toothbrush, toothpaste, and hand soap shelf made from the cabinet base door that I no longer needed after my galley cabinet reconfiguration.

I understand the predrilling and all, but my question is how thick are the walls. How long of a screw is too long?

This might be of some help if you are talking about an outside wall.  I used a hole saw to install a second electrical feed receptical.  This photo is from the hole saw “core”.  As you can see it is about 1 3/8”.  The left side is the outer skin of the PC.  This is from a 2016 model 2552 so yours may be different.  I can’t help for interior dividing walls.

Interior versus exterior walls will vary.  Drill a very tiny hole and insert an extra long hardened (skinny) trim nail to determine the working depth.  Use that same hole for a mounting hole.

The thickness of the wallpapered tempered hard board is 1/8" thick.

Any screw longer than the thickness of the wall board (thin) is wasted. I'd suggest a molly type wall anchor made for that thickness of wall board if you want it to stay put.
