2350 replacement mattress
« on: March 02, 2021, 12:04:57 am »
Just ordered a custom mattress for my 2350 from spencers mattress  (one day RV mattress) in Ventura. Ordered an 8 inch but wondering what’s the thickest anyone has put in the 2350 with the TV and DVD player in the bed area.  Found them from a recommendation on the Phoenix USA owners forum and lo and behold they are in my hometown. I also posted this on the PC Facebook page... they won’t start working on it for a day or two so if I wanted to I could increase the thickness.  Any thoughts?  Oh and I also bought that Froli star system but the mattress is too worn for even support.  I plan to spend a lot of time in my motorhome and I figure the bed is about the next most important investment as the tires (and yes I just got a new set of six)

Hi Lgvta,

We replaced our original 6" mattress with a Walmart Hometics 6" mattress.  I would be worried that an 8" mattress will swallow you up.  Getting in and out from the rear corner bed is hard enough.  Before getting our replacement mattress, I had actually considered a very dense 4" mattress to reduce the "swallowing" and to increase the ease of getting in and out from the bed, but my wife didn't see it the same way.

Another concern with an 8" mattress would be the man-handling of it in the same tight quarters, like when putting on a mattress pad and fitted sheet.  Our Hometics mattress is a whole lot heavier than our original cheap mattress.  Heavier and thicker yet would be even more difficult.

On eBay, suppliers are selling very affordable 4", 6", and 8" thick foam.  I wanted to experiment with various foam thicknesses and densities, but again my wife was not in agreement to do so.  I had also thought of buying a 6" very dense bulk size foam, cut it to size, and zip it inside the Phoenix supplied mattress cover and be done.

Hi neighbor !

Spencer made our 2350 Matress too. It's the basic  7" 2-layer model, but I supplied the memory foam "topper" layer from our old rv and he cut it down.  If you do a lot of  of warm weather camping check out the gel foam option.

If you are considering a thicker  matress  ask about a custom firmer base layer instead.  Spencer let us try out different matresses in the showroom. We dropped off the old matress to use for the  pattern and he helped me install the new one. But for the hard old style tri-folding sofa I ended up buying a Milliard 4" trifolding matress that is very comfortable too. The density of the foam makes all the difference.

When it's  finished  check out a queen size RVsuperbag. We have an original  dual sided Travasak. They really should be standard equipment for corner bed rv's  (nod) (nod)

Thank you!   Small world isn’t it CalCruiser!   When I went to the showroom, Jim said there was only one mattress that would work.... it was very comfortable and I opted for an 8”.  Interestingly, I gave them the dimensions of the mattress from the factory website 50 x 76, and also dropped off the old mattress and they called me and asked about the dimensions because they said the mattress was 50 x 72!   I’m wondering if Phoenix changed the dimensions of that rear bed on later units or why they would be a 4 inch difference in the dimensions from the website and the mattress because I don’t think there was a 2” gap on both ends.

And Ron, I appreciate the suggestions about the foam replacement options- and saw your detailed post about how you were able to cut down the foam- but I think the mattress with springs will be better in the long run.  When I was measuring I even thought I could go higher than 8 inches but decided to stick with 8.   I also installed that Froli star system so with a new mattress and that I should be very comfy!

That’s crazy about the wrong  dimensions! Spencer and Jim are old school and do everything in-house, one at a time. Glad that they survived the lockdown economy here in CA and that you were able to find them.

Just don’t get TOO comfy and fall asleep at Ken’s world! Seeya at PCV or Fin’s after  Oceano Dunes fully reopens, should be soon🤞🏻

A shout out to Spencer’s Mattress in Ventura for the beautiful, comfortable, custom mattress (with inner springs) for my PC 2350.   Soooo comfortable and very quick turnaround.  (Ordered it Monday at 4:30 and picked it up today!!). I wanted to find a spot to camp tonight but had to settle for a few hours at the beach..,

That looks like a beautiful mattress.

We did the same thing this fall in our 2551.  We ordered 2 spring/cotton mattresses for our twin beds.  We found a local shop in Michigan that used the springs or foam.  We opted for the springs after talking with the business owner.  He was able to make them to the exact size that we wanted.  I am not a fan of memory foam mattresses because to me they retain body heat and also offgassing (a chemical smell). I think it is all a personal preference.

We have now been using our new mattresses for the past three months.  We couldn’t be happier with them.  They are heavier then the memory foam but we work together to put the sheets on so there are no issues.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as we enjoy ours.
