Outside bay clip removal & replacement

Outside bay clip removal & replacement

The clip holding up the bay door housing the sewer hose broke (see pic attached).  Two questions:

1)  Can the clip assembly be found at most RV dealerships, Camping World, etc.?  Or does it have to be ordered from a supply house. I'm assuming the replacement will come in a neutral beige color & have to be spray-painted silver to match the original.

2)  What is an easy way to remove the clip base from the coach?  There are three Phillips Head screws, but since the clip has been in place since 2013, the screws won't budge when I've tried to remove them with a screwdriver.  Any suggestions?

Hi Bruce,

There are a few different sizes/brands/manufactures.  I advise to call Phoenix to get the exact one so that you can reuse all the existing mounting holes.  It will likely be plain white plastic.  You will have to paint it to match your rig.

I've replaced several RV baggage door clips. They are available at Amazon in plastic and metal. And different hole patterns, which might end up being very important.
However I've never had a hard time taking the screws out nor have I seen them attached with 3 screws. I've got a feeling someone had trouble with the clip fastening screws remaining in the proper position and over correcting the problem. I'll bet they used some type of sealant to secure the screws in place in addition to the third screw.

My suggestion on fixing it is to try your best to loosen the screws. If the heads break you may have to file the remaining portion off so that an other clip will fit, but in the same position as the original clip so the clip fits properly to hold the door.

Normally only 2 screws are needed to hold the clip. Depending how the screw removal works you may have to use a clip with a different hole pattern and then redrill pilot holes???

If your lucky you might be able to remove enough screws to reuse the same holes. But sounds like you have a difficult fix cosmetically. You can always leave the broken clip and simply put a new clip in a location that will still hold the baggage door open.

I don't know why, but the entire RV industry uses square drive hardware.  It has been this way going back to at least 1983 when we bought our first motorhome.  All home improvement centers sell the driver/tool, most often as "bits" in a set.   CLICK HERE to see ones sold cheap at Harbor Freight.  The picture explains the tool you need.

Never thought to mention what type of drive you were using to remove the screws

Ron is correct. You have to use a square drive to remove the screws. A phillips will fit but it will not get a good grip on the screw head.

Most RV accessories such as the hatch clips are installed using screws that use a #2 square drive.  Drivers look like a screwdriver but with a square tip and are available at Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc.

I learned from my father-in-law that these square bits are called “Robertson” bits. 
The “Phillips” family probably thought this up.  BWAHAHAHA

Actually they were introduced in the early 1900's by Peter Robertson, a Canadian tool salesman.  He was inspired to create a "better screw drive" when a conventional flat screwdriver slipped and injured his hand.  I don't know why they have found a home in the RV industry, but they are a very positive drive type screw--something like the current Torx head.  I have actually bought Robertson screws in the past for the positive drive before the Torx became as common as it is today.  I prefer either of them to the conventional Phillips head in any challenging environment, because I can depend on positive drive and removal--even years later.  Robertson screws were more universally common in Canada over many years past--probably because they were invented there.  Over years, they were generally considered to be to Canadians what the Phillips head has been to the USA.
