Severe Duty truck and tow brake kit
« on: April 27, 2021, 01:20:49 am »
Finally got my PowerStop Z36 front brake kit installed today. Parts are made in USA and appear to be high quality. Cross drilled rotors are beveled to prevent cracking. Tech support said to skip the special bedding procedure and just drive it. Good reviews online but too soon to tell. With only 3 miles driven the pedal pressure feels lighter. I am expecting the carbon fiber  ceramic pads to stop quicker, and the drilled &  slotted rotors to run cooler and not warp as easily as the stock Ford parts. Ordered from AutoAnything.

Cal, I don't want to be a "downer" here, but I highly discourage drilled and slotted rotors for anything other than competition track-driving or your performance show car that never sees rain.  I installed rotors like the ones you pictured on our tow vehicle 2006 Jeep Liberty to increase braking performance.  All those holes and slots did was accelerate rotor rust to the point of premature replacement.  I will never make that mistake again.

I volunteer at an auto charity.  It is not common, but I have seen a few broken rotors, missing chunks of metal that broke off from cracks that formed from the holes.  They all come with beveled edged holes when new, but that slowly wears away for cracks to develop.

You had it done and so it is done.  Just be mindful of my warning.  Inspect your rotors annually for excessive rust formation.  Hopefully as the years pass by, you will conclude that I was full of hogwash.

Thank you for the cautionary warning Ron. I will be sure  keep an eye on them. The rotors have a 3 year/36k mi. warrantee against cracking, and hopefully the silver zinc plating will help protect against rust and  corrosion as advertised.

Time will tell.  I am always mindful to downshift early and tap the brakes when descending steep grades, and  will continue to avoid the most extreme driving conditions like Tioga Pass. I still managed to warp the stock rotors just by getting on the brakes too hard at a short highway off ramp.

The silver zinc plating will do a great job where the pads do not make contact, including inside the holes and slots.  How long the protection lasts depends on whether you can avoid winter road salt spray or over-heating the rotors.  Just one good road salt exposure without a rinse soon thereafter will destroy that beautiful silver plating.  I personally appreciate the zinc plating on my seasonal vehicles that are stored during the winter......that includes our PC.  But I hope my first set of replacement PC rotors will still be a number of years away.

These front brakes are great! We just returned from a 700 mi trip to Yosemite, so they got broken in on the way down in  to the Valley via  the south entrance. When we stopped at Tunnel View I could  smell the hot carbon fiber ceramic pad compound. But the pedal effort and stopping distance no longer feels  like driving a heavy vehicle. The zinc plated rotors will never see snow or salt, so hopefully they will last. The PowerStop Z36 front brake kit was a steal at  AutoAnything.com.
