Lippert motor - can you use?
« on: February 20, 2020, 10:57:19 am »
During my travels I had a slide out quit working.  Of course in a location without too many repair options.  We did discover the issue was that the wiring on one motor had shorted out.  Mine was one of the first with the new Lippert slides and the wires had been kinked in the wall and apparently rubbed thru with enough travel time.  Anyhow - of course they didn't have that motor but  a different model. (had I known at the time that they would not be able to get back any sooner than they did, I could have ordered in the right one), so that meant I had to replace both motors.

All that to say I have a functional Lippert motor that will do me no good.  Since I am finally sitting still where I can get to a post office, I figured I would see if anyone needs this.  If I understood correctly I thnk Phoenix may have changed to a different model at some point.  This is the Lippert part # 236575.

I hope this helps someone. Your slide out design is also called a Schwintek. It is lighter weight and more compact than the older slide out systems and is now installed in a lot of new RVs.

You actually might be able to remove the damaged motor and have it rewired rather then buy a new motor.

Presently I don't have a Schwintek slide out design.  But several years ago I owned a Heartland Sunset Trail Reserve TT. While owning that TT I replaced 3 Schwintek (Lippert) motors for the same reason you had to replace yours. I always carried 2 extra motors (old ones rewired) and got very good at understanding how to replace them and understanding what caused the problem. I would take the damaged motor to a electrical motor repair shop and they would simply rewire the damaged wires with thicker gauge wire. I would then reuse the motors.

You are correct in assuming the short was caused by the slide rubbing on the extremely thin gauged power supply wires. On my TT I found that what caused the shorting issue was that the motors were installed improperly. They were put in 180 degrees in the wrong position so that the wires rubbed on the slide out as it was moving into position rather than turned to the outside of the of the slide out frame where there was no moving parts. After they were installed properly I never had a problem with that motor. But I had 3 slides and it was a huge issue because I never knew if another motor was going to short out. I also had to replace several tracks due to damage caused by the motors, on one side going out and in the process damaging the soft aluminum teeth.

The good news is that if they are properly installed, with the wires turned away from the moving slide out you likely will not have any problem. When reinstalling the motor I would also be very liberal with electrical friction tape. And then I would have to recaulk the frame that housed the Schwintek motor. BUT I'm not sure how the PC slide outs are designed because some Schwintek motors can be replaced from an inside access point. On my TT I would have to replace them by removing a outside trim panel.

Good luck. And as a point that might make you feel better, I just replaced the slide out motor on my 2005 PC 2350. So all slide out systems can have issues.

Zolman,
Your info might be useful for others. In my case I am FT and the slide was in the out position when it died.  Having watched and helped the gentleman take it out - not something I would ever try by myself.

I had one of the first with the new slide (not that I like to be first) and know they were adapting to the changes.  As best I have heard, this has not been a problem in general.
