Cherokee Towers

For all you Jeep Cherokee towers out there.  Do any of you have issues with power steering codes and the inability to start the vehicle unless you replace the under hood fuse in the flat tow wire harness?  We thought we had this issue fixed before we left but yesterday it reared it's ugly head again.

Tall Guy:   My 2014 Cherokee was recalled for the “death wobble”  when being towed four down.  My switch to energize the power steering system when being towed is in the center console and a 20 amp fuse under the hood (i bypassed the fuse pulling by installing a thumb switch).   If I do not de-energize the system before starting the engine I will set all kinds of dash lights off.  I then use my ScanGuage do clear the codes.  If you have not run a a 12V hot line from the coach connected thru a battery tender box on the Jeep you need to do that since having the power steering pump on uses a fair amount of power.  Not sure what year Jeep you have since I know their approach to handling the issue has changed since 2014-15.  Best of luck. Do not start the Jeep before you shut power off to the pump!

Thanks for the info Ragoodsp.  The first thing we do every time is remove the fuse and we still have issues.  Both technitions I talked to have said there are very few issues if you're using the reccomend flat tow wire kit.  I think I have a defective kit that's causing other issues or it was improperly installed but we'll see.  Once you've cleared the codes with the scan gauge does it start right up or do you need to wait a bit?  Also, is there a limit as to how many times you can clear the same code?

If I should forget to flip the toggle switch in the cabin or pull the fuse (I flip a switch under the hood) the car still starts up but the dash looks like a light show going on.  The ScanGuage clears the codes easily and I have had to do it a few times so yes the same codes get reset.  If the car is dead period the pump activation is just drawing the battery down if there is no hot wire to keep it charged.  Before I had a hot wire to the Jeep the battery would be dead in about 7 hours depending on how much the BrakeBuddy was working.
