Jatrax.... regarding getting lost. When we used to tour on the motorcycle many times we would ride with the gps off and only turned it on to find our way once lost. We found a lot of great places to visit this way. On a trip to Italy we did the same, and we got lost over and over. Ended up visiting castles and villages we never would have known about.  The gps was great for finding our way back to our base hotel after.  Sometimes lost leads to Wonderful adventures

A couple other thoughts about Garmin. If you are actually going to be boondocking, a company called On X out of Missoula makes maps for hunting that I use. You can buy a micro SD card that will fit in handhelds and other units. They give great detail as to land ownership, great for finding public lands to camp on. Once you get to your destination put the card in your handheld and head out. These maps have topo etc.
Another thought is some of these RV models have backup camera options, I have no experience with these, but the prices seem reasonable.

Sometimes lost leads to Wonderful adventures
Well said, and sometimes that is half or more of the fun.

I was brought up in a family that hunted every fall and a big part of that was teaching us basic woodsmanship, navigation and some survival skills.  Though I didn't realize it at the time my dad's lessons were the same as I later read in books on wilderness navigation.  You keep from getting lost by not getting lost.  Meaning always keep your sense of place around you.  Know where you are and where you are going.  Above all, pay attention.

I have only been lost in the woods once because I always followed dad's instructions.  That one time was absolutely terrifying.  Despite all my 'dead reckoning' the logging road I expected to hit was not there.  At that point you start questioning all of what you thought you knew, and it is easy to panic and do something dumb.  Fortunately another of dad's sayings came to mind.  "Always take time to contemplate."  So I sat down on a log and contemplated.  After a bit I realized I could not really be lost, I knew what direction I had gone, when I turned and roughly how far I had gone since.  So I started making gradually widening circles and after a bit found the logging road I had expected had dead ended 100 yards short of where I had expected to cross it.  I had walked in the woods for over 6 hours making a large circle, covered miles of country and coming to within 100 yards of my intended end point with nothing but an awareness of where I was and where I wanted to be.

Of course had I had a GPS then things would have been a lot less stressful :)

Here's another of dad's sayings:  If you get lost or turned around always head downhill until you find a stream, then follow the water downhill.  Sooner or later you will find a road or people.

Jatrax, no doubt two completely different types of being lost. Ones a good kind one nits so much. Been a while since I’ve been bad lost and being prepared was what cost us. I got lost in the sand box thinking my partner had brought the handheld and he thought I did. Found our way but a unfriendly area can sure raise the neck hair .  Getting lost exploring the back roads in Italy was the good kind.

Joseph, when I rode I didn’t think of getting lost.  I viewed alternative routes as learning new areas and having new adventures. As long as I am gassed up, (bike or car) I never get lost.  😀

Mohoecher ... agreed, I use to only use the gos on my bike if I got lost. But as jatrax pointed out there is another kind of lost. We’re going to Death Valley next month  and plan on some hiking. I’ll keep my hand held and waypoints noted. Every year it seems like hikers get lost or worse.

Going back to the original post on built in. Some really like them, others don’t and others want both or none. Not so sure there is any true wrong answer.

+1 on that!  Though I consider the good kind "exploring" :):).  The wife does not always agree with that however.........................

Sorry, more off topic. Jatrax's dad was right on! STOP - Stop, Think, Observe, Plan
