Mold Under Clear Sealant
« on: March 11, 2017, 05:36:11 pm »
I have a 2551 over two years old.  On the vehicles door, about half way down below the window, there is a bead of sealant the width of the door.  The sealant is about a quarter of an inch wide.  There is mold growing under this sealant.  This is not the only place I see it.  Most of these sealants are supposed to be  mold and mildew resistant.  Has anyone else noticed this.  It is not one long black mold but little eighth or quarter inch spots.  Just curious if anyone else has noted this.

Bob,
We had this happen under the DiamondShield that was on the cap over the windshield. It looks like mold under the film caused, we were told, by a bad adhesive that was used.

I set up scaffolding and spent two days picking the stuff off. I heated it up with a hair dryer and then went to work using plastic scrapers to get underneath it. I had hoped that it would come off in a sheet but not so. If you google it, you will find many ideas on what has worked for others. I can tell you that I tried Xylene and it did not work. Rubbing alcohol did not work. The only thing that worked for me was the heat. I then cleaned off the leftover adhesive with Xylene and put a good coat of wax on it.

Yeah, I have that mold under my sealant too.We have a 2012 2910   AND, I noticed that in several places under our blue diamond plastic coating we have what looks like mold or fungus. I called Blue diamond and was told it has a lifetime warranty and I am awaiting a call from one  of their installers here in Florida to remove and re apply new plastic coating. But to what you said about the silicone, have you called Phoenix for information on whats happening there??? I plan to right after I get the new final put on....let me know...please.

We visited Coach House factory recently and asked them if they applied DiamondShield. They do not because they said there are problems with mold growing under it.

Our 10 year old Diamond Shield is fine as it should be considering our PC is stored indoors.  One problem I have with the Diamond Shield is that a certain type of honey colored bug juice stains it.  I have tried everything I thought of to get the stains off but no luck yet.  Fortunately it's a small unpopular bug so the stains are few.
