Rear Storage Compartment 2351
« on: January 26, 2017, 06:18:21 pm »
I am planning on having the factory leave this blank in order to customize the storage to our needs.  In speaking with Earl he mentioned in order to attach anything one needs to have factory install "backer boards".  I assume an example of this would 1/2" x 6" board I saw installed today on the exterior face of compartment with 2 red hooks for cable storage screwed into it.  Once I lay out the design I plan to use an adhesive like 3M 5200 a marine adhesive caulk that is very strong to the point of almost being impossible to remove.  In this way I could mount various size pieces of wood to attach hooks, padeyes, etc.  Liquid Nails would probably work just as well.  In this way nothing would ever penetrate the original wall structure.  I would very much appreciate any thoughts or experiences about this or any pitfalls I have overlooked.

Again many thanks!

Mike

I had them build that wall of plywood.  Probably what Earl told you as well.  He mentioned that the stock build had backing only where the hooks were and the other areas were too thin to support hooks.  So assuming it got built that way the wall should be solid throughout.  I had intended to just buy hooks and put them where I wanted.  However your idea of gluing wood supports and attaching the hooks to that might be better.  Especially since we have idea what is behind that wall.  Drilling into wiring or a water line would be..............  bad.

I see from my build sheet they charged me for: "Rear wall w/backer for hooks all the way across".  We should also consider the impact this type of modification has on weight though.  I'm not used to worrying about that and in the sticks & bricks would not have a problem using 3/4" instead of 1/2" but in an RV every pound counts.

is that rear storage wall so thin that you can access interior - like in 2400 kitchen cabinets would be there?

Seems so, but until I pick up cannot say for sure.  That wall is behind the shower, sink and wardrobe.  So I would be a little concerned about drilling into a water line, or power line.

our coach is just starting the construction process- so this is timely. Have you thought about having them put a small hinged door or covered opening which allow us future access to the rear of coach which contains some fairly important equipment? I don't know why they would not.

I think there is an inner structural wall and then the rear cap covers over and seals it perfectly.  Having an access panel inside the rear storage compartment would show just another wall.  I wish I could remember exactly what we had seen our last visit in October where there was one unit with the rear cap ready to be installed.

I spoke with PC today and they indicated the backer board is 1" plywood behind the finished facing.  I am choosing to not have the factory install anything in that area.  I am visiting the factory next week and will double check.
