Water filtration for our PC
« on: December 12, 2016, 09:17:16 pm »
Got word today that our 2552 PC is IN THE HOUSE! (cheer)

We are new at this and are wondering what others use to protect their rigs from too much pressure (type regulator used) and filter on the city water hookup hose.

It seems to me you never know what you are going to run into out there. Also don't want to mess with bottled water; weight, plastic bottles, yuk, but not satisfied with the filter pitchers. There are counter top filters, under cabinet filters, and facet mounted filters like the Pur that can filter out over 60 contaminants and should make my morning coffee even better!

 :help What's everyone using?   tymote

We use bottled water and pitcher-filtered water in our PC for consumption.

Adding: I should also say that our bottled water is typically used for day excursions in our Jeep.  We won't crack open a bottle to make coffee in our PC.

I don't want to mess with storing, and carrying cases of water or having to run to wally world when we run low.

We use a Brita pitcher at home but, since I'm such a nice guy and cooperative customer, our local water company ask me to collect a water sample each year for testing and it's always been well within Federal limits for regulated contaminants.

The trouble is there are a lot of other unregulated contaminants in the nations water supplies and you never know what you are hooking into. Take pharmaceutical drugs for instance, part of the reason for the Rx drops at our local police station is to keep them from being flushed and getting into the water supply!  >(

Our Brita filter (reading from the box now) will REDUCE the levels of Copper, Mercury, Cadmium, Zinc, and Chlorine only. Check out the Pur.com website to see the list of 60+ yucky things that their filters are certified to reduce.

When water leaves any local water plant it SHOULD meet all State and Federal guidelines for regulated contaminants but what happens to it as it travels miles before it comes out of your facet? Has there been a break in the main down the road and now a lot of sentiment has to be flushed out? Or, a recent break in the campground ground water lines. (The need for a sentiment filter or the city water hose). And what kind of lines are they using anyway?  (WH) Does anyone remember Flint Michigan??

Now my lovely wife will say, "What does it matter, we'll only be there for a few weeks at the most anyway." I don't know about you but, at this stage of the game I can't afford to loose anymore brain cells, (ie. Lead at Flint) which the Pur filters claim to reduce along with all the other junk.  pyho

And what about a pressure reducer on the hose?  :help What is everyone using?

The wife says I'm over thinking things, (The curse of an active mind). Am I walking this lonely road alone?  >:(

A lot of bottled water is just local tap water, and then the making and recycling of the plastic bottles uses a lot of water and is bad for our precious Mother Earth.

Your thoughts and suggestions are deeply appreciated.  tymote

We use a basic Camco inline filter which I think is rated at 20 micron and provides some amount  of toxic material removal through the activated carbon.  We follow that up with a Camco pressure reducer.  Both items are available at Amazon and Walmart.   We use bottle water for drinking in areas where the water quality might be suspect or have a bad taste.  I have thought of an under sink filter system but have not gotten there yet.

We also use the Camco inline filter and a Camco regulator (the one with a pressure gauge on it) It's amazing that water pressure in some campgrounds is so high.

We bring along along a Zero Water pitcher, which comes with a water tester.  No bottled water for us.

Hi Bill,

I do understand your concern over toxic water.  You will eventually determine what works best for you.

The only place I get the Weebeegeebees over the drinking water is when staying in the area of Moab, Canyonlands, and Arches in Utah.  The area is my all-time favorite place to visit in spring or fall so I refuse to give into that.

Here is a little bit of history of the area.  The area was mined for uranium with the processing plant located up river from the city of Moab.  According to Wikipedia, the plant operated from 1952 to 1984.  I would have guessed it closed much sooner.  During much of it's operation, they did not have a retention plan.  The long time residents there have stories about the town's tainted radioactive water supply and it's affect on their health.  It took decades to make the old site save to keep the uranium out of the Colorado River where the community gets it's water from.  Even without consideration to the processing plant, there are "natural" levels of radioactivity in the soil.  I don't believe uranium can be filtered out so we do our best to avoid tap water from the area.

Many people don't know this but the roads that go inside the canyons of Canyonlands NP are the original mining roads.

In this picture the town of Moab is at 12 o'clock up the valley a mile or two from the site of the uranium ore processing plant in the foreground.  Dead Horse Point SP & Canyonlands NP is at about 2 o'clock, Arches NP at about 7 o'clock.

We do the same: Slim Brita pitcher in the fridge, Camco inline water filter between hose and rig, pressure regulator at the spigot (need a new one, ours died) AND we spray bleach on the spigot then flush prior to hook up. Critters like to lick the water out of the spigot and I prefer my water to be spit free. We have hit campgrounds with nasty tasting water once or twice and resorted to buying bottled water then but we normally do not use bottled water. We also have collapsible water jugs we fill if we are going to camp without hookups and haven't bleached our holding tank in a while.

Just a reminder that you want to regulate your electricity also. We use Progressive Industries 30 Amp portable EMS https://www.amazon.com/Progressive-Industries-EMS-PT30C-Portable-Protector/dp/B003AL23TC hooked at the post and lock it on with a bicycle cable and padlock (when possible).

In a previous camper I installed a sealable inspection/cleanout port in the top of the fresh water tank.  I used this to wipeout the tank with Clorox as well as making sure the tank was dry for winter storage.  The tanks do not completely drain so there is an inch or so of standing water and a damp tank that can promote algae or other growth. I installed the port soon after I bought the unit and never saw any nasty growth in the tank but others who had used their unit for a year or more reported rather unappetizing growth when first accessed for inspection.  I have thought of installing a port on my PC but have not done it yet.

This is the inspection port I used.

We use an inline filter from these guys (http://www.rvwaterfilterstore.com) and a pressure reducer from Camping World.
