Slide Rattling
« on: September 12, 2016, 08:53:50 am »
Our slide rattles when driving, more so on slightly rough roads and loudly on rougher roads.   A member here on the forum has the same experience and said, after bringing the slide in all the way,  back off slightly but not enough to break the seal.    A call to Kermit confirmed her suggestion.

We tried that but no improvement.   Maybe we aren't backing off enough.   It doesn't bother hubby but his hearing isn't as keen as mine.  I wouldn't give up the slide but would enjoy traveling more if it were quieter.

Anyone else have that problem?  I appreciate any suggestions.

Are you sure it's not the shades. That's what causes the noise in mine.

G.S.:

I have the loud rattle and it has driven me crazy for a very long time.  I have isolated it to the topper and the main spring in the topper.  Attempting to place tension on the spring has not made any difference.

Thanks for responding.

John:  Not the blinds.  One of ours works its way down from time to time so I know that sound.   This is a clanging metal sound coming from the slide.

ragoodsp:   I'm sorry you have the same problem.  If you find a fix let me know as it drives me nuts, too.

If possible, get on a ladder to reach the topper, tighten it up as much as possible by hand, then keep it tight with bungee cords or duct tape, then drive around to see if the rattling stopped or changed in some manner.  That would help to determine if the topper is your culprit.

Be sure to immediately undo the restraints when you get back home.

I also had a slide rattle but mine originates with the two metal cross pieces right behind the drivers seat. When driving I wedge a piece of foam between the forward most cross piece and the little section of wall.  You can test if this is the source by just shaking it by hand. Hope your rattle is this easy to fix.

Our 2552 makes the same rattling noise that Bob just mentioned.  We eliminate the noise in the same manner.

Thanks Ron, Bob, and Bruce.

I don't think our rattling is the topper, Ron.

Bob and Bruce: When the slide is out I have shaken those metal  side brackets and that is what we hear when driving.  Sure hope we have the same situation as you and all it takes is a piece of foam to fix.

When we picked up our 2552 we noticed the same slide rattling.  When we returned to the factory the next day for some other fixes the they gave us a piece of foam to "chink" between the support bars and the side of the slide.  A less than elegant solution but it stopped the slide rattle.  Now if I can just remember to put it in and take it out.  I think proper size linkage bushings would be the answer but can't say for sure.

Thanks fandj.   I'm feeling very optimistic now that we have the same problem as you and am anxious to find some fix-it foam and go for a test ride.

Well I started reading these to Mr and he did a lot of chiming in... it is the side bars on the slide..we have 2 forward and 1 in bedroom. If it rattles no one knows...And the rattle was sufficient for us to have piles of metal shavings on the floor every night we stopped on the trip home. I made sure dog stayed on sofa till I got the little pieces of copper wire and the piles of metal shavings wiped off the floor. We are getting less as we got home but it took a while. Mr was surveying a solution and talking about plastic washers.. hope the slide still works when he finishes his cure for the road trip noise... We do a trip on 23rd so will know then what is going on. My hearing is going so not sure I really need a fix with the unpleasant noises...Hmmm.  If  I see likely solutions that will allow slide room to go out and in again I will have to print it out so Mr can survey and see what he can do. Mr Fix it ... might have to get busy. Patricia

We use a small piece of rubberized shelf liner material to stop the rattling noise from the slide-out metal arms behind the driver's seat.  Just fold some and push it between the two metal arms to keep them separated.

Be sure to remove the liner before extending the slide-out.

We have not solved the slide rattle, yet.

Apparently the 2100's have a different slide situation than the larger units.     The only time we see the side of the slide and the support brackets is outside when we have the slide extended.  No part of the slide mechanism is visible from behind the driver's seat when it is retracted.  Everything is concealed and no way to insert foam to quiet the rattle.   I guess that is why Kermit said to back it off slightly after bringing it in all the way.

I have sent the manufacturer an email but haven't heard from them.

Any other 2100 owners with a noisy slide?

Thanks for all your suggestions.
