Bilstein Shocks for Cruiser 2010 2551
« on: January 12, 2016, 10:53:39 am »
There has been previous discussions on the Bilstein shocks and I went online to a couple of sites. There were two different shocks to choose from Comfort and HD shocks.  One site had Comfort shocks but the one site said they were for under 9000 lbs. weight but the other site said differently.  Which ones did our members purchased for their MH with over 10000 lbs. weight of coach?   I just want a smoother ride and want to buy the right ones. I have a shop who will install them as they worked on my MH before.
It can be so confusing.  Don't want to purchase the wrong ones.   I had a call into Kermit but he is so busy and never got back to me. I don't know what kind of shocks are on my unit.  I know when I hit a rough road the unit really shakes, rattles, etc. The  vehicle weight on 2551 is 14,500lbs. with 4600lbs front and 9500 rear. So what do I go by?
Since this forum has been a big help I thought I'd start here.  One site was Shockwarehouse.com and the other one was all shocks.com.  A complete set ranged from$85.00 each on shock.com  to about $92.00 each and  $364.16 for a complete set on Shock warehouse.
One site said Comfort shocks were for units under 9000 lbs. and the other site said Comfort shocks were for over 10000.  So what do I believe?  Need some input form our members as I could not find previous discussion on the forum.  Planning on getting new tires as well since my tires are over 8 years old.  Don't want to take a chance this year even though the tread is good. Safety is first.
Just trying to update MH for my next travel season.   Is there anything else I need to know?
    Happy Safe Travels....

Hi FT,

I have been monitoring shocks for E-series since 2007.  I have concluded the best shock for both comfort and heavy duty performance is the Koni FSD.  I will try to describe how it works as simple as possible.  Inside the FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) shock is a valve that allows the fluid within to easily travel between compartments when road conditions are mild.  This reduces the feel of the road, offering the best possible ride.  But when conditions call for the shock to kick-in, the rougher road increases the flow of fluid which shuts the valve with the force from more fluid which then the shock is doing it's job in heavy duty fashion.  So you get both mild and wild in one shock.

Koni-FSD shocks have been installed for many years on high end class A rigs.  Just a year or two ago, Koni finally offered them for the E350/E450 motor home.  They would be on our rig, but back in 2007, I went with one of the best at the time (Koni/Bilstein), Koni's adjustable shocks.  They are set to our rig weight which is a permanent heavy duty setting, equivalent to the HD Bilsteins.  The only concern getting the Koni-FSD is the whopping $725 price tag.  I would shop around to see if they can be found cheaper than direct from Koni.

The Bilstein factory tech rep. told me to buy Comfort for our 2552. He said both Comfort and HD were heavy duty shocks, but Comfort gave a smoother ride. The Bilsteins have similar engineering as the Koni FSD shocks, meaning they adapt to the road conditions. We are very happy with the Comforts.

Thank you. In talking with Bilstein  Rep they said the same thing about the Comfort shocks. this makes me feel a little better.

I put the HD Bilstein on my 2552. I chose the HD because I wanted more control. At first the rode hard but after 10K miles they are a little softer. If you want the smoother ride go with the confort model. Forget the over priced Koni shocks that Ron is always pushing.

We chose Bilstein HD because our "expert" said the comfort series is best for smooth roadways but HD give better control on rough roads. We replaced all the tires at the same time with Michelins. That was 15,000 miles ago and we are very pleased.
