New York's Amazing Adirondacks

Does anyone have any experience driving through or staying in the Adirondacks?  Which roads to avoid, campgrounds that are recommended?  I camped up there in my teen years, but that was ages ago.  I found quite a bit of info for the Finger Lakes and the Lake George/Lake Champlain areas but not much in between.  We would be interested in anything in the range from dry camping (if it was a particularly nice area), to limited hookups, to resorts.  Mostly we are looking for places to relax, take in the scenery/nature, maybe do some fishing or boating (not required though). It will be a relaxing stopover for us between the Erie Canal (a week on a canal boat through the locks) and the Boston area.

We can't give personal recommendations as we haven't been there yet but we met a couple that toured all up there and gave us a list of places they stopped and loved. Three were in New York: Letchworth State Park with beautiful campground, stone trails, waterfalls, lots of CCC work; A nice private campground in Wilmington in Adirondacks, on a lake, they explored Lake Placid and Nat'l History Museum of Adirondacks, said it was great (didn't have the name); Ausable Chasm - narrow canyon you can get narrated float trip and hike near Lake Champlain. You'll need to research these but it's a start. The couple were youngish, outdoorsy people that spent a lot of time exploring on their bikes and watching nature when we met them in Florida so their perfect spot may or may not be your perfect spot.

Thanks, Holly/John.  Did a lot more research and dug deep into my memory.  Once we started putting the coast to coast to coast itinerary together we decided to pick two spots in the area. There just isn't time to see everything in this country, dang it!  We'll be staying at Adirondack 1000 Islands RV Park, on to Lake Placid (good jumping off point for Whiteface Mt and Ausable Chasm). From there we are splurging and taking the ferry across Lake Champlain to Burlington VT before exploring New England and visiting family in the Boston area.  Our trip looks amazing on paper.  Hope it turns out better than that!  Only downside is hitting Lake Havasu when it will be about 106 in the shade.

We also couldn't resist scheduling one night at Clark Creek North COE Campground (Acworth, Georgia), since gradygal's posted picture of the place looked so alluring.
