Mopeds or Scooters

Does anyone use Mopeds or Scooters for toads?  If so,  what are your good or bad experiences.  We would really rather not tow a car.  We did that on class A but prefer not to on this little 2551.  Thank you!

They are both under powered. We started with a Honda 150CC scooter. It could go highway speeds but was terrible going up hills. We actually got pulled over in Seattle pulled over by police for going up hills too slow for traffic.

Your better off getting a street legal small dirt bike like a Yamaha XT250. It is lighter than a comparable scooter, has a lot more power and much better 2 up. We used it for 8 years and never had an issue. We now flat tow a Smart Car.

Depends on what you want to use it for.  As @zolman stated a small moped/scooter won't suffice for highways. I actually have a Yamaha XT250 and have hauled it on the back of our PC; you obviously need to have a motorcycle license (and experience) to ride one. Loading/unloading a 300lb. motorcycle can be a bit formidable unless one opts for a (pretty $$$) lift rack. On the other hand, if you only want to ride around campgrounds or take shorter jaunts, ebikes (which we have also taken on our PC) might work very well for the task; they certainly have for us.

Ebike = Moped. Class 2 = speed limited to 20mph. Great for getting around small  towns and  the National and State Parks.

We use Uber and Lyft for getting around the big city or a night on the town.

On short trips we carry a pair of  light weight Qualisports Dolphin folding class 2 e-bikes in 34” plastic bins, one on the floor and the other on the sofa secured by seatbelts.  At the destination we lock them up outside.  On long trips we transport them on a Thule T2 rack. I got the Dolphins because at just 48 lbs  putting them inside for safekeeping is manageable. The Qualisports Volador model weighs  just 37 lbs but has less battery range.

A few years ago i took a trip to Costa Rica and we rented scooters. They put me on a 115 and wife on a 50. IM a 300lb guy and wife is, lets just say, considerably smaller.  We generally had no issues and went everywhere we needed to go. Only issue was on a steep uphill grade for about 1/2 mile, was slow but we made it. We have this as an option we are looking at as well with a small enclosed trailer and 2 scooters. From my experience scooters would be fine as long as you plan to stay off major highways and put around at around 30-35 mph as a general rule.

I agree that a standard toad-vehicle increases complexities, hence considering scooters or similar, but.....

Where we go out west, most especially south-west, all too often, a standard vehicle in a 4x4 configuration is "a must" to see the sights we came to see.  The roads, if you can call them roads,  are just too harsh or otherwise not possible for our motorhome.  I don't want to punish our PC like that.  Also, our 4x4 Jeep Liberty doubles as a place for extras that we would normally leave at home, bicycles, golf clubs, our huge zero gravity chairs, firewood, as some examples.

Speaking of zero gravity chairs.....

I always felt that Phoenix missed the mark with both the older and newer rear wall design that was introduced in 2004.  With a little more thought, the spare tire compartment we have, could have slightly increased in size, been squared-off and include a compartment door to carry large items like zero gravity chairs in place of an actual spare tire.  The choice of carrying a spare tire for long adventurous trips, or zero gravity chairs for short get-away trips, would have been great.

So i will have to agree about the jeep aspect. We own a jeep and one of my wifes favorite things to do is go get offroad somewhere and explore. I mentioned the scooter idea is one of our considerations as we had great fun with those. But ultimately we will want to have a jeep with us for places like everywhere in the high desert out west.
