shower door caulk
« on: May 12, 2011, 12:38:54 pm »
Hi,
Although we have a new Phoenix Cruiser 2350,  the caulk line around the shower door has some gaps.  It looks like it didn't adhere properly.  We would like to repair that area.  Could someone let me know what type of caulk would be best?  Also, would it work to just fill in the gaps and smooth it over?  Or, would we have to remove the whole line from top to bottom and redo?  I am hoping we can just patch the missing area!
Thanks in advance for your help!

Roni, you will need to use 100% silicone caulk ("kitchen, bath, plumbing" or "tub and tile"). Unfortunately, you really should remove all old caulk as silicone doesn't tend to stick to cured caulk very well. I had to do this in the corners of our PC shower. Take a plastic putty knife to scrape old off. If this doesn't work, you could CAREFULLY use a metal scraper (like a 3 in one tool). I say carefully, because you don't want to scratch the shower surface. I even had to use a silicone caulk remover to get all the old residue off. Remember.....it's all in the prep!! Good luck. Not a fun job.

Trudy,
Thanks for your help with this.  Since the "missing" caulk is on the outside of the door frame, towards the bathroom side, we will hold off on redoing the whole strip.  We'll see how it holds up for now.
Thanks again- Roni

I re-siliconed the outside & inside on my 2551 shower after experiencing some leakage during showers.  Get as much of the old stuff off as possible; painters tape the metal frame above & the plastic well below; lay it on direct from the tube; spread it w/putty knife as described below; let sit for awhile & voila; no more leaks (Hopefully)
