Equipment behind the carpeted area?
« on: February 16, 2022, 06:29:21 pm »
When I start the generator I have a loud vibration coming from behind the carpeted area behind the drivers seat. There is a delay of a few seconds before the vibration starts. What equipment is installed in that area? Could it be the transfer switch? We have been on a 3,000 + mile trip & headed home. Any advice will be appreciated. I have not let the generator run but a few seconds after the vibration starts. 2020 2552, 50amp. All equipment works great except for this issue. Thanks, Chuck

Chuck,

That's exactly where the transfer switch is located.  In addition, the transfer switch has a short time-delay after the generator starts--so it activates a few seconds later.  I think the combination of your symptoms definitely points to the transfer switch.  What type of "vibration" do you notice?  First thought would be that the relay that pulls in to transfer power from the generator is not pulling in cleanly with one "click", but is vibrating back and forth.  It's about the only moveable, mechanical, thing in the transfer switch.
You can access the transfer switch by locating the two long screws in the face of the vertical carpeted panel and removing them (you'll have to dig around in the carpet and feel for them to find them).  The panel will come off; the transfer switch is behind that.

Chuck,

After your remove the cover to the transfer switch box tighten all the contact screws to ensure everything is tight.

Before you remove the cover of the transfer switch, make sure ALL 120v power is disconnected!  Generator off, shore power disconnected, inverter off. While the inverter output shouldn't go thru the transfer switch, that doesn't mean it can't if the inverter's built in transfer switch is defective.

Thanks guys, I new I could depend on the forum for the right information. The roads on our trip were so bad (new post about bad roads & liquid springs) that things needed to be tightened. I also put some extra insulation in that area. Here's the information on the transfer switch: Automatic Transfer Relay Switch, Model PD52, rated 240 VAC, 50A, 70A Neutral, Progressive Dynamics, Inc, Marshall, Michigan (www.progressivedyn.com). Thanks again, Chuck :)

For other 'Antique' PC2350 owners (Ours is a 2006) searching for it,  you will find the transfer switch located on the converter under the fridge.  The box behind the drivers seat is nothing but a junction box in ours.

We have a dinette with no slide-out.  Our power transfer switch is located directly above the generator in the front dinette bench.  Per my request, we also have the subwoofer in there to free up space in the precious outdoor storage compartment.
