Inverter/Converter question

Inverter/Converter question

In my 2013 2910T, is there a separate converter, or is the Xantrex 1800 Pro Series a combination of inverter & converter?  If there is a separate converter, where is it located in the coach?  The Xantrex inverter is located in the compartment below the refrigerator on my coach.

Bruce,

I'm going to give you a quick answer.  Likely someone that knows the layout of the 2910T can be more precise (my unit is a 2552).

The Xantrex 1800 is an inverter only.  Your converter is separate.  It is typically located behind wherever your breaker/fuse panel is located and is essentially part of the panel--many times the converter and inverter are both located in the same general area--in the 2552 they are under one of the beds.  I think the converter/charger unit that Phoenix was installing in 2013 may have been a Parallax Model 5355 (for 50-amp coaches--similar but different model for 30-amp coaches).

Hopefully someone with a 2910 can give you more specifics.

Bruce,

In my 2019 2910T the converter is to the right of the invertor, below the refrigerator. I believe it's part of the power distribution panel (fuse/circuit breaker box).

If my house battery non-charging issues are related to the Parallax converter, has anyone replaced theirs?  If so, since I'm pretty sure the 500 Series is an older model, what model did you replace it with?

There are two options:  replace the entire Parallax Power Supply including a new converter or just replacing the converter.  I replaced just the converter because I switched out our house batteries to Lithiums from AGM batteries and wanted a specific converter for Lithium batteries.  The new converter I replaced in our old Parallax Power Supply was the Progressive Dynamics 60 AMP LiFeP04 Converter charger.  In order to replace the converter I had to make changes to the tray that held the converter.  I also added an electrical outlet since my new Progressive Dynamic is a plug in device rather than hard wired.  Send me a PM if you need more details.

Bruce, there have been multiple replacements of the Parallax by users because the standard unit of that era is a single stage converter which is hard on batteries (especially regular flooded cell type).  Parallax does offer a "Temp Assure" module for the unit which monitors battery temperature and adjusts charging rates, but that module is usually not installed in initial installations (can be added).  Based on prior forum discussions, I believe most replacements went to the Progressive Dynamics unit since it has a 3-stage charging profile.  There were replacements where the entire power panel was replaced, and others where just the converter was changed.  I don't know whether the lithium-rated unit mentioned by DKCruzser is also used for flooded or AGM lead-acid batteries, but PD makes a converter/charger that is.  It is also possible that Parallax is now offering a multi-stage converter that would be a direct replacement for your original--a careful review of their website should answer that.  Actually, the users that added the Parallax "Temp Assure" module to their original converter were happy with the change and it seemed to solve the water boiling problem of the original converter.  If your basic converter is good, that might be a viable option to improve it with a more simple alteration.

Mike,

Our Progressive Dynamic is specific for Lithium batteries.  You are correct; Progressive Dynamics does make other converters which do work with lead acid/AGM

My PC had A Parallax 5355, 55 amp converter, I replaced it with the WFCO 9855LIS floor mount converter. It is a big improvement over the Parallax converter and allows for the charging of Lithium batteries. I kept my electrical distribution panel, just removed the inverter section and added the WFCO. Been happy with it ever since the install, no issues and it has a better charging profile than the Parallax.

It wasn't very hard at all.  I didn't want to remove the complete power distribution system as there was nothing wrong with the Parallax system. So I realized that I could just remove the converter section and utilize the converters mounting bracket to mount the 12V fuse panel and install the WFCO converter in the same area that I removed the Parallax converter. It was actually pretty easy. I also added some 1/4 - 1/2 blocks under the mounts of the WFCO converter to raise it off the floor. That way if for some reason there was a leak the converter wouldn't get wet. Here ia a couple pictures, looked for one of the converter mounted behind the power distribution panel on the floor but I guess I never took that shot. Message me if you need more info.
