Surge Protector Humming??
« on: January 30, 2020, 01:23:22 pm »
We noticed, after we returned home from our last RV trip and plugged into our home shore power (we have a 50 amp plug), a humming sound coming from behind the panel that houses the Surge Protector indicator, inverter, generator, and tank indicator.   The inverter is off so I don't believe the humming sound is from that.  If I unplug from the power the humming sound goes away.   I suspect it is the Progressive Power Surge making the sound.  There are no error codes on the Progressive indicator panel and everything seems to be functioning.  While not a loud humming sound it is annoying.   How does one access the back of the wall to determine where the humming sound is coming from?  Any thoughts would be helpful.

thanks

Check the battery charging voltage from the converter while plugged in to your 50A shore  power. The humming sound could indicate a failing charging circuit. It should be at least 13V DC.
Goin' where the wind goes...

My bet it is the inverter cooling fan, it does not have to be on for it to run.

I can't speak to the specifics of the Progressive Power Surge, but typical in all 120v equipment that may have a transformer in it, the transformer's core or windings may have come loose and/or the mounting of the transformer itself can produce a 60Hz hum.

It doesn't mean anything is wrong other than it may be loose.

Yes, it can be annoying and if the above is the cause the mounting for the unit can be tightened and if that fails to stop the Humm, then only replacing the unit or isolating the mounting (rubber feet so to speak) may help.

However, be aware, the 120v transfer switch is also behind that panel and it may be humming instead.

As to how to open that panel, I have not had a need to open the panel on my PC, so can't offer advise.

The actual inverter and converter are not behind that panel.  Not sure where they are in the 2910D.

Is it possible you are hearing your transfer switch?
They are usually located low in that wing wall and are known to hum. If so what you are hearing is the AC holding coil.
I notice it in my brand new 2552 as well.
The manufacturer Progressive Dynamics does offer a DC holding coil version which is said to be silent. Unfortunately PC doesn't use them.
I contacted PD to see if I could swap out the coils but they said the only way was to buy a whole new transfer switch.
Not worth that yet but may be if it gets louder with age.

Good luck!

We had the same problem. It was the transfer switch and a loose connection. Fixed and the hum stopped!
