Road Trip P4 Satellite Question

  Our "new" 2017 PC came with a Winegard Road Trip P4 Dome and was used with Dish by previous owner. Trying to decide on keeping Dish which in our case means buying a Pay-As-You-Go Dish receiver and possibly the Dish DVR box (some hundred bucks plus use fees). We already have Direct TV/Genie in the house and I also have the SWM upgrade equipment which needs to installed to use Direct service. Using Direct means I pay no subscription and just switch from house to RV and back. WInegard says I will only get SD on Direct (apparently you can get HD on Dish at least in some parts of the country). This all sounds complicated, but wondering - anybody out there faced this situation? If so, how did it work out?

  Leaning toward the SWM upgrade (way cheaper?), but intrigued by the Dish HD option.

I have a Road trip 4000 on my PC, works great with Dish.   You can buy a receiver for about $100.   Dish has an RV plan where you only pay for the months where you use it.  To stop service, you just don't pay.   To start it up again, you simply reactivate your account.  Almost all their channels are HD.

I'll add a comment although I'm not sure it contributes much to your question.  I also have the Winegard Road Trip P4 dome.  Although I picked my RV up in February, I didn't attempt to set up the satellite until a couple months ago.  We are long-time (satisfied) Direct TV customers with our home system, so I didn't really consider using Dish Network in the RV.  I decided to get a dedicated receiver/recorder for the RV so I wouldn't disrupt the home system when I'm on the road, and ordered a Direct TV HR-24 from Winegard.  The up front cost was $200---but after that the only addition to our bill is the monthly receiver lease of $7.  Interestingly, I do not have SWM equipment in my installation (although I think Winegard indicates you are supposed to use the SWM adapter for the P4 antenna and that particular receiver)--but my installation works perfectly.  It's true that the setup does not provide HD TV, but I have to say that the picture looks absolutely perfect on the 32" Samsung in the RV.

After looking at the links that Don posted on the Dish deals, I think they look very good--considering the nominal prices, intermittent pricing on the service depending on use, and availability of HD.  If I didn't already have the DTV home subscription to tap in to, I think the Dish deal would merit careful consideration.

We have a King dish, not Winguard, but I'll offer this input anyhow.  (1) King does not work with the DirecTV Genie hardware, had to buy an old technology box (may have been an HR-24) and add it to the account (like mikeh).  (2) SD only but looks OK.....

In hindsight I would have probably gone with a Dish compatible system.
