Three Point Seat Belt
« on: August 21, 2019, 09:10:38 pm »
Hello Folks. Was just thinking about all the great stuff I will do when I get my new 2552 PC and started thinking it might be a good idea to upgrade the seat belts on the recliners to a retractable 3 point system.
Like this: https://www.seatbeltsplus.com/category/3-Point-Retractable-Seat-Belts.html

We anticipate bringing my "Tween Age" grandchildren or occasional adult passengers. Thinking the shoulder type might be a bit more safe and comfortable but not really sure given the direction of travel is not their intended use.

Have any of you tried this?

The installation would require installing a pretty secure anchor point through the slide wall on one side and through the refer cabinet on the other. Not sure if PC would condone this but I plan to ask.

Would value your thoughts.

Regards, Jim G.

Do the recliners face forward? The purpose of the 3-point belt is to allow the upper body to 'swing' to the side, instead of just bending at the waist when an impact causes sudden deceleration. They only work that way when the force is 'in line' with the way the seat is facing, ie: conventional passenger and driver seats. ""given the direction of travel is not their intended use."" makes me think the recliners are facing the side as you go down the road.

The purpose of a seat belt in the rear recliners would be to keep the rear passengers from being flung about the coach in case of impact/rollover. If the seats are not facing forward, the shoulder belt will do little if anything more than a lap belt to help the rear passengers. `

Do the recliners come with lap belts?  Looking at the states that require ALL passengers to be belted in, almost think they must!

I share your concern. When under way, Grandma V and Grandson (8yo) like to be on the bed in back, reading stories or looking out the back and side window. I once imagined them flying past me through the windshield on impact.  :beg
BUT... Being that the boy and Grandma would go 'nucking futz'  if required to be belted in and facing forward for hours on end...Even though BY AGE LAW Grandson should be belted in, :-[,   I resigned myself to be hyper-vigilant avoiding frontal impacts, NO radio or TV while underway. My attention should be on the road and other drivers, not getting lost in a song, movie or audio book.  When I see the unavoidable coming,  I will flip it on its side first if necessary, and Good Lord willing...........   (nod)

As others have said, the over the shoulder portion is designed for forward facing seating positions and is to prevent the people in those positions from face planting the dash, steering wheel, or seat backs of the front seats.

They can, in some instances, help prevent the belted person from flopping around in a roll over.

Neither the slide side wall nor the refrigerator are strong enough to be anchor points.  A rather ugly frame would have to be created to anchor any shoulder belt to rather strong anchor point.   Strong in the sense of being able to support a few thousand pounds of force without moving.
