Mysterious Sound From Furnace
« on: April 16, 2019, 12:47:53 pm »
Recently experienced a very unusual thing.  While having the our 2351 detailed I noticed a sound coming from the side of the coach near the furnace exhaust vent.  Sounded sort of like trying to start or restart.  Opened up area under bed and found it did seem to be coming from the furnace (at first thought maybe it was water pump).  As I was checking fuses and thermostat it shut off.  The thermostat was in off setting, but fan was on high.  I reset to off with fan in auto, which is our usual setting.  Has not happened again.  any thoughts or is this one of those "Twilight Zone" things. Am going to start furnace to make sure all is well.  Coach was unplugged only on solar.  I also wondered if the detailer accidentally sprayed some water through exterior vent and this could have caused a relay or something to switch on.  Scrambling for answers as I really dislike things with no logical explanation.

We had this continuous restart happen on our 2552.  It happened right after I filled the fresh water tank to the top.  While driving excess water sloshed out the overflow pipe and entered the furnace enclosure and caused the issue.  I removed the fuse for the furnace to stop the restart.  After awhile it dried out enough to reinsert the fuse and the furnace worked ok.  I had this happen one more time and I took it back to Phoenix where they resealed around the enclosure and I haven’t had the problem reoccur.  This repair was done almost two years ago.

I think the Atwood design makes it very susceptible to moisture.  On my unit the control board is mounted at the bottom of the furnace enclosure meaning any water entering is probably going to make it to the electrical controls.  I think the control board was relocated in later Atwood furnaces.  A number of failures similar to mine were reported.

Mike, this has also happened to me with my 2019 3100.  It happened a couple of times shortly after delivery.  Fortunately, it has not happened again.  Glad you reminded me so I can add to my short punch list for warranty.
