Transfer Switch Malfunction (?)

Transfer Switch Malfunction (?)

A few days ago, we heard a buzzing and it was coming from the area behind the driver seat and the control panel.  A slight, but sharp whack stopped it.  Just now, I exercised my generator for the first time for an hour and all went well.  I turned off the genset and went outside and turned on the 50 amp breaker  (I turned it off to make sure I was getting power from the genset).  When I entered the motorhome, the buzzing was back and quite loud and I discovered I had no 110 AC and things were still running off the inverter.  A more serious whack was needed, the buzzing stopped and 110 AC power was restored.  Can I safely assume that it is the transfer switch?  Is the transfer switch actually located behind the driver seat, in the wall. 

I tried to call PC USA, but no answer.

Sorry you are having problems with your electrical system-most likely the Automatic Transfer Relay Switch-Model PD52.  Yes the transfer switch is located at the bottom of the angled wall behind the driver's seat-see attached photo.  The transfer switch in my coach even when working properly is rather noisy.  PC closes their factory for two week during the Christmas and New Years Holidays.  They should be open again for business on January 7, 2019.  I can't help you trouble shoot the transfer switch, but you might want to look at the following website link and download the transfer switch manual:  "https://www.progressivedyn.com/rv/automatic-transfer-switches/pd52-240-vac-50-amp-automatic-transfer-switch/#downloads".

Thank you, Sir !    Fortunately, it is working fine, but does require attention.  It is under warranty.  I'll give "them" a call in a few days.

I recommend getting eyes on the box and wires just in case there is visible damage. I read about a transfer switch starting a rig on fire. Don't recall where I read it.

To access, feel along the upper vertical portion of the carpeted "baseboard" on the wing wall behind the driver's seat. You'll find a screw head. Unscrew that and you should be in. It's a long screw.

The photo above shows the box and wires sitting on the floor. Mine is on top of a piece of 2x4. It isn't noisy.

Winnebago has been experiencing ATS failures of recent.  The particular brand of ATS was made in china.  It appears that the Copper wires that have been tinned for corrosion protection, have been breaking down due to the heat and other.  Hence loosening up in the connection stud and causing excessive heat and a buzzing noise.  To add to the drama, the studs holding these wires have to be torqued to a specified foot pounds.  This was not happening at the factory, causing the wires to loosen up and same results.  No fires yet but some melted parts on those units.

Corrections have been made at the factory on torquing.  Owners have been cutting the frayed wires and re-installing using the correct torque pounds.
Seems to be working.
