DirecTV Receiver Activation
« on: September 19, 2018, 12:56:16 pm »
As I grow older, it seems that I become more pessimistic.  I wondering if I will have any difficulty in activating my DirecTV receiver in my PC?

I have had DirecTV (DTV) for many years and have had a dedicated receiver in my motorhome, riding on my residence account.  My account still has two receivers.  One is listed as "Living Room", the other "RV Living".  Also, I still have east coast feeds I used to have both east and west coast feeds).   I have read on some other boards that DTV would no longer activate a second receiver in an RV.  DTV told the user that they must have two separate accounts!  The user overcame this problem by telling DTV that the second receiver was in another room of their house.

Has anyone activated a new DTV receiver in their new PC?  Did you encounter any problems?  I hate calling DTV and trying to get my ducks in a row beforehand.

Thanks!

Barry T

We take our DVR from my work shop with us in our PC and we have never had a problem connecting.  One time between trips which was about a two-week period, we had left the DVR in our previous RV so it was not "connected" to the DirecTV system and when we turned it on it wouldn't connect until we called DirecTV.  We explained why it wasn't connected and they said no problem and reset our unit.  Usually when we are in between trips I put the DVR back in the shop so it always gets any updates so it is no problem.

PS: The DirecTV dish that we had Phoenix install on our PC has a SWM Lnb (single wire multiswitch) so we only have to connect one wire to the DVR to be able to record one channel and watch a different one.  At home we have to connect two wires because none of our satellite dishes are SWM's.

We take our second DTV receiver with us each winter.  We have a portable Winegard Carry Out dish which only works with the older hr24 model receiver.
Settings need to be changed in the receiver when using the smaller portable dishes. The only call to Direct TV is to provide our current location for receiveing local programming and this has never been a problem.
The other issue is how your PC is wired to receive a non-cable signal.  For Both of our PC’s I had to do a modification to the tv jack in the over head passenger compartment, per Barry/Sues instructions.
Newer units may have this as a standard feature.
The big question is if DTV will be dropping non HD broadcasting next spring as rumors indicate. If and when that happens many of the older portable dishes will no longer be able to receive a signal (HD)

I have read on the internet that sometime in 2019 Direct TV is going to stop broadcasting their SD channels on the 101 satellite.  If this is true, the small portable satellite antennas will be rendered unusable.  Anybody have information on whether this is true?
