2910T--Pretty Good Price!?!
« on: July 23, 2018, 07:34:31 pm »
Was down at Fort Worth this weekend, so took the opportunity to stop by Motor Home Specialists (about 20 miles south).  Huge place--200 acres, almost 1500 RVs total in their listed inventory, #1 volume dealer in the world.  Takes quite a while to get around their lots (even on the complimentary golf carts).  Ran across one of their used consignment units---a 2014 Phoenix 2910T with less than 7300 miles.  Their price of $64,900 caught my attention.  My target is a smaller unit (2350/2351), but if I were in the market for a 30-31 footer I would have to look twice.  With the recent price increases, that's a 50% reduction on a 4-year old unit, which looked pretty nice with my quick glance-over.

That’s a good price considering they will take less.  There is always room to negotiate

The 2910T is the unit with three slides correct? If it is, I recall really liking the layout but I was concerned with the length and weight of three slides that a person would be left with very little carrying  capacity.

Yes you are correct.  "T" is for "Triple Slide", "D" is for "Double Slide".

I agree with you about the weight.  I believe that was the inspiration for Phoenix to delete the spare tire along with the ability to store a spare.  Too bad they applied that to every PC they make now, not just the heaviest ones.  You have to specifically order a PC with one to get a spare tire compartment now.  Otherwise you have none and no ability to store one at a later time.

One aspect of the price is that the unit had several options--nav, full body paint, hydraulic levelers, second TV.  With the low mileage, just seemed like a pretty good starting point.

I checked rvtrader.com for comparisons and this unit is priced at what is normally asked for a 2010-2012 model year. I notice this unit is located in Texas. Recently there were a lot of floods in Texas and some of the flood damaged vehicles that were salvaged are back on the market. I'd advise to check every nook and cranny for evidence of water.

Excellent point!  Flood damaged vehicles can be a racket---and that could apply to RVs as well as conventional autos.  As I said, I'm not a buyer--since my focus is a smaller unit--but anyone that may be should remember that really good pricing on a used unit always deserves a very careful review.

We live near Chicago, IL.  We bought a 2008 Pontiac Solstice GXP with just 2800 miles from Houston, TX last February.  The sellers were an elderly couple who bought the car new.  They said it never seen any such flood water and it showed, brand new as I had hoped.

I mention this because I got a good deal primarily because of the paranoia over flood damage.  That Texas PC in discussion might be price-lowered because of the same national response to vehicles from there.

If that PC is a great value and has a clean/clear title and clean Carfax report, it would be well worth a flight out to inspect it in-person.  Come prepared to buy it on the spot and drive it with the Texas title back home.

Well, it looked good with a quick walk-through.  Several photos on the dealer web-site.  Don't know about the Car-Fax, but I'm sure MHS verifies the title with the owner before they take it on consignment.  With the Phoenix price increases for new units, I've been looking very hard at the used market.  This price jumped out at me immediately because I haven't run across anything with this age and mileage in this price range--even mentioned that to the salesman (who wasn't familiar with Phoenix Cruisers).  If it had been a 2351, I would have applied the "fine tooth comb" and would likely be making a deal (at one-half the price of my target build on the 2019 Phoenix pricing list).

Comment on Carfax - manually/visually verify the VIN. We had a reputable car dealer try to sell us a used car with a clean Carfax report.... except the report belonged to a different car with same make, model, year, etc. I noticed the VIN didn't match on the sales docs. We verified on the actual car, then asked for the correct report. A whole cluster of sales guys hung over a computer for far too long, occasionally peeking at us over the cubicle. When it became obvious they weren't going to be able to give us the real report, we told them to forget it and left. Had we signed the sales docs, we probably would have bought a problem car.

This price is not unusual, I bought mine 4 years old with under 20,000 miles for less than half if new.  The market is so saturated with low mileage MH’s that finding a low mileage unit that will fit your needs at a good price isn’t all tha difficult.  These things depreciate like a rock , a boat, a motorcycle or most any other toy.
