Plastic around Dash instruments bubbling
« on: March 30, 2018, 10:05:05 am »
Has anyone had a problem with the plastic PC puts around th dash board instruments bubbling?
Our 2017 recently developed several small to medium sized ones and they can’t be smoothed out.

You might be able to use this technique:

A work colleague did a similar trick on the same problem with his Mazda RX7, a vehicle known to have this issue.
If you attempt this trick remember to keep the heat gun moving.
Good luck.

It’s not the padded part but the hard plastic around the instruments.

Contact the factory.  The company that applies that film had an issue in 2017 and the result is that the film is bubbling up and cracking off.  Mine had bubbles 3 to 4 inches across.

I called the factory and they promptly sent me a complete new dash and the arm pieces from the doors.  They offered to have a local shop remove the old dash piece and put on the new one but I did it myself.  Requires loosening a couple bolts on the steering column support but if you are handy it is not a big deal.  Took me maybe an hour all told.

Call Dave Ponsler at Phoenix and explain the issue.  Or email him some photos of the bubbles.  Dave@phoenixusarv.com He said mine was the worst they had seen to that point.

Thanks for your reply with all the useful info. Was concerned about the difficulty of a fix but sounds like Dennis can take care of it after getting the new parts.

A little hard to explain.  You have to lay on the floor mats and look up at the steering column to see them.  I had a hard time finding them.  You will need a metric socket wrench (I forget the size, maybe 13mm) to loosen them.

Once you have the steering column loose it is still an awkward job.  Only attempt when well rested and your temper is under control.

Let me know if you cannot find them and I'll try to take some pictures after work.

John
Thanks. Dennis says there are several bolts under there and he’s not sure which one is the right one. But now his major concern is a piece of masking tape on the part they sent that says “missing part”. He plans to call the factory tomorrow and maybe get some help. Scared if he does get the old piece off it won’t work if truly there is a “missing part “.
