Slide-A-Bed
« on: March 01, 2018, 02:34:14 pm »
Well, it looks like changing our target to a 2351 has hit a dead end due to the bed size.  So it's back to the original 2551 or 2552.  We're wondering how the twin beds that slide together are supported.  Not only am I tall I'm also heavy and I'm concerned about the sturdiness of that option.  Also, if only the longer of the two twins is extended how wide is it and how wide is the aisle-way to the bathroom?

Thanks!
Gary aka Tall Guy

Gary, I cannot answer all your questions but I can say that the support is not an issue.  I'm not really a big guy but I sleep on the overhang and it has no flex in it at all.

We opted for the passenger side power bed with a dinette where the driver's side bed is so our setup is a little different.  Our bed moves about 12" approximately.  I believe the aisle with beds retracted is about 24" so that makes sense.  Both beds extended would close the aisle completely, only one extended would leave about 12" for the aisle.  That's just my sorta informed guess but I bet it's close.

PC has a 2552 is stock with the power slide beds. Since you are a little over an hour away that may be a trip you want to make.  Testing the real thing will answer your questions.

We live in Clinton Township MI and frequent your area at times as our son lives there. Go Broncos!

How tall are you?  Maybe your head will hit every light fixture and a/c unit when walking around with your shoes on.

Thanks for the responses!  We're trying to gather information so the next time we visit we'll have a list of things to go over and a few ideas to run by Earl.  Ron, I'm 6'6" tall and probably will hit my head on a lot of stuff if I'm not careful.  I've been this tall since I was 19 so after a lot of bumping I've got a lot of experience ducking. :lol  It's not that big of a deal since I'm used to it.  Sometimes being tall is nice like when the short "little old lady" asks me to get something off the top shelf at the grocery store for her (you wouldn't believe how often that happens).  And other times not so nice like motorhome shopping.  Right now we're leaning toward extending the 2551 to make the beds 6" longer and have them slide together.  Hopefully Earl has a way to make them longer without extending but that option is available.

Thanks again and any further ideas are eagerly awaited!

You might be able to extend bed by removing the pantry on 3100 and possibly 2552 with sofa. I seem to remember discussion here to that fact.  That way you would not have to extend the chassis. Earl would have that answer.  He is truly very nice to work with.

We are trying to make time to visit factory again to look at models and determine which, if any are right for us. We have gone two times and did not accomplish that as we got distracted. Having a plan before you go there is a great idea.

I too have gone through this process with a frame stretched 2551 to get an 80" bed with power slide on the one bed. Changed to a 2552 dinette w/o the slide out. This allows the dinette to slide forward to just behind the fully extended drivers seat, additionally w/o the slide out edge trim you pick up more length totally just over 12". Therefore the drivers side bed grows from 68" to 80". The power slide will still work on the 80" bed. Saved a lot of money by not buying the slide out and no longer needing to stretch the frame. You just need to sort out the pros and cons of the slide out. Good luck.

Thanks the info. Now only if I could go to the PC website and price one out. That feature has not come back yet. Hopefully soon!

Tall Guy, you are definitely doing the correct homework. A comfortable bed is very important in any RV. If anyone does the math, majority of time is in bed, then maybe drivers seat. I would also consider a bed that stays made up to be just as important. Beds that require breaking down, require places to store bedding, and storage is always limited. Current model bathrooms take up a huge percentage of square footage, and for most people get very little use.
Maybe you could convince PC to build you a bed with east/west orientation. Lots of length, wouldn't have to stretch frames and still have a slide. Call it the TALL GUY VERSION.

I always thought a higher-sitting captain-style queen bed across the back wall with drawer or cabinet storage underneath facing forward, and large exterior storage rearward would make for a great bedroom with relatively easy access for both people.  The exterior storage could have exterior doors on each side of the rig for easy access.

Absolutely Ron!

Or I would consider Bunk beds, with the top being a fold up.Great for covering all sleeping needs, and comfortable.

New owners always mean changes, maybe time to update some models too.
