Another damn water leak
« on: January 17, 2018, 04:40:00 pm »
We have a leak that soaks the head liner at the top of the windshield above the passenger's knees. I have had all the stuff on the roof resealed; including the lights, Sirius antenna, TV antenna, etc. I had an Auto Glass place test the windshield itself, which I guess tests the seal between the Ford and the coach body since that seam is just above the windshield. No leak there. There is no leak when parked in the rain, but if we drive in the rain, the head liner gets wet. Has anyone had this problem? Any advice for how to find this leak?

I had a similar leak on a Dynamax Isata ( very similar design) on the Ford Chassis but my leak was on the drivers side. I found the leak by spraying the seam between the coach fiberglass cap and the Ford metal roof right above the windshield with a water hose with a pressure nozzle. I removed some of the interior paneling in the cabinet above that area, tightened a few screws that secure the cap to the roof in that area and recaulked the seam on the outside. Problem was fixed. I suspect the seam is opening up when driving due to flexing between the two components coupled with a little air pressure. I think I would try cleaning the seam with solvent and then applying clear silicone to the area as a first step. When testing for water leaks on any vehicle I have a person inside watching while I start at the bottom with a water hose and slowly work my way up vertically. If you start at the top it is more difficult to pinpoint the leak.

THIS. ↑↑ The morons I bought my coach from went top to bottom, and figgered out it was the top right marker light. Then replaced it with a black based unit. and clear silicone. Installed a new headliner, and declared it sealed.

Soaked the carpet next morning from a light rain.  >(

My above windshield leaks were mostly* rust in the channel hidden by the windshield trim, now patched. I sincerely hope that your coach is not experiencing holes in the metal from rust at 4 years old..  :beg

*I feel your pain, however.. passenger side carpet wet today, and we just had heavy dew. So evidently I have more to discover.

Hi jfcaramagno and Volkemon,

Dynadave may be on the right track.

Try performing this exam that Kermit told me years ago of which he said was primarily done when water got in above the windshield.  Get outside your PC and place your two palms under each corner of the B+ cap and try lifting up the B+ cap.  If it separates from the van roof, one or more of the screws that mount the B+ cap to the van roof are broken.  That would be how water is getting in while driving.  The roof resonates creating temporary gaps for wind-driven rain to get inside.  When you stop, it reseals.

I had a squeak in our front cabinets.  Kermit's inspection process concluded "All Was Well" with my B+ cap mounting screws.  He then provided another bit of advise which resolved my front cabinet squeaks.

I hope you guys find your leaks real soon.

Ron

Had a leak from the Antenna Connection on the roof, the wire cover for the connection came look and the water followed the wire to the front of the head liner, Fill the cover with RTV and putt back in place and let dry. No more leaks.

I can vouch for Jim's comment.  Just this past fall when up on the roof cleaning our PC for winter storage, I noticed the antenna coax rubber boot was not seated properly.  I never seen any water inside, but I could see how it could happen with that boot completely out of place.

I would imagine the coax boot is working it's way out of position when cranking up and down the antenna.

John knocked that rubber boot loose once when scrubbing the roof. He checks it now every time he is up there and it hasn't come loose again.

Thanks for the great tips about the cap coming loose from the chassis. I will check that out.
