Thanks for sharing that THIAC.

One trip out west we left our Jeep Liberty home.  According to the Scan Gauge, on the open road with tall grass standing straight up (no wind) we were averaging 11 to 12 mpg between stops with our 2007 E350 PC-2350.  Speed was ~65 mph.  But such conditions are rare for us.  Murphy's law always seems to have the grass leaning into the direction we are coming from.

Gasoline is usually cheaper than diesel so to get a handle on the actual costs:

E-450    = 10 mpg, gasoline average price = $2.35
Sprinter = 15 mpg, diesel average price = $2.61

Cost per 100 miles:
E-450    = $23.50
Sprinter = $17.40

Still have to factor in the cost of DEF (not much) and higher maintenance costs.  But clearly the Sprinter is more economical if you are moving a lot.  For short distance campers not likely a significant difference.

Another factor would be the fuel used by the generator.  If gasoline then that comes out of the tank.  If propane that is a different bill, not sure how to determine whether the cost comparison between propane and gas.

*national fuel prices average on week of August 28th.  Regional differences or proximity to highways may alter these

Two hams:  if you can get a campsite on the water side, we stayed at a very beautiful and peaceful campground  in July- Massena campground in Massena N.Y.   I'd bet it is even better now that Fall is coming.  Safe travels.

Another nice one is Hamlin Beach State park just west of Rochester.  Watch your height clearance on
the parkway.  old low stone bridges.  I had a Jayco last fall at 11' made it through some 10' 6" bridges ( on the sides) by staying in the middle.

Wow you just cleared those bridges. Did you use a spotter?  Was the bridge labeled with height? I am courious. I never had that situation and want to know what to do should it come up.

The Lake Ontario Parkway runs from Rochester NY to almost Buffalo.  It was built I believe in the 30's-40's.  Very pretty route, although the road surface is very rough in places.  It has the old stone bridges that arch up from either side.  The first four bridges that you run into heading west from Rochester, are pretty low.  I dont know if they are are listed as a hazard anywhere, but parkway is restricted for larger trucks.

I was completely taken by surprise.  They are very well marked in big red letters.  The low points of 10'-6" and 11' are on the far sides of the bridge.  It was sort of a split second decision.  I was traveling at 55 MPH and about 200 yards from the first bridge.  I thought okay the Jayco is 11'-6", there were no warning signs at the entrance to the parkway, there were class C RV's traveling on the opposite lanes under same bridges.  The top of the arch was much higher (I learned later) is over 12', so I got in the far left lane (middle of bridge) and slowed a bit and zipped through.  The thought of the $500 deductible rental policy did cross my mind.

Later at the campground the locals were talking about how those big red letters freak out first time travelers.

Thanks for the campground suggestions. We've stayed at Hamlin Beach many years ago in our Airstream trailer. We sheared a hardened hitch bolt on the rough parkway; and the hitch gave up as we were turning into the campground. We were able to limp into our site and went to Ace Hardware in Rochester to buy another hardened bolt. Exciting times.  :)(:

The parkway west of Hamlin Beach for about 25 miles is a wreck.  Could not go over 30 MPH in 55 zone.
Pot holes and frost heaves on a concrete surface.  Engineers today know you cant put a concrete roadway in a zone 1 climate area like upstate.
