Ultra Leather Ultra-Leather Ultraleather
« on: February 14, 2017, 12:37:04 pm »
The sample PC provided me of Graystone "Ultra Leather" is labled as "Aberdeen Med Alabaster" and "Halo" on the back.

I found this site listing the material:

https://store.mastertechrv.com/collections/aberdeen

Which states:

"Halo Polyurethane a Value Alternative to Genuine Ultraleather. It possesses many of the same qualities as Ultraleather: It is a polyurethane w/rayon backing, it's tough, comes in a variety of styles and colors, is softer and richer looking than vinyl, is colorfast and has good cleanability. Haloleather is widely used by some of the RV manufactures and RV refitters. Halo is a good Value Alternative to Ultraleather but, it is Not as soft, durable or cleanable as Ultraleather.

Halo Aberdeen- Has a rich Distressed Leather look, a soft (hand) or touch, a nice grain pattern and a 100,000 double rubs, no wear rating"
=============================================

"Ultraleather " is a trademarked name and thus defines a product. From another site, it stated that Ultraleather is spec'd at 400,000 double rubs which confirms it as more durable than the Halo Aberdeen being used by PC.

I asked if "Ultraleather" is available as an option and was told no.

This post is just meant as an FYI to clarify what PC is currently using. I have to admit that when PC said "Ultra Leather" as an option I thought I would get "Ultraleather". It is "Haloleather" not "Ultraleather." Others may be confused in a similar manner.

I did not ask what time frame/ model years this has been used by PC.

In general, if "ultraleather" is not used it may be something else. I have also seen the term ultra-leather.

This is good info and relates to my question about the Lippert RV furniture collection done in "PolyHyde" sold by Camping World, which I found to be really nice and comfortable.  I would want to install it in my new PC, so I've been trying to research it and found it is an upholstery material that Lippert trademarked, and it appears to be European leather (thinner than normal leather?) with a polymer coating.  I sent a message directly to the Lippert Co to ask about whether it is actually leather, warranty, the  likelihood of it flaking, etc.

Just an update for anyone interested.... heard back from Lippert and their PolyHyde is a leather/vinyl combination material... and the entire piece is made of the same material (i.e. not leather seats joined to vinyl sides which seem to cause problems).

I believe the leather/vinyl combination material you described is called "Bonded Leather" in the furniture industry.  It is often between 15% and 22% leather particles mixed into the vinyl material.  Furniture stores brag when it is in the 25% range.

When we were shopping for new furniture at home, we learned a lot about bonded leather.  We learned to STAY AWAY FROM bonded leather because in 4 to 6 years, it will crack and flake much the same as seen on the few PCs here.

Decent affordable leather is called "Top Grain" leather.  It is 100% real leather with a top grain somehow added on it's surface.  The process and color dye hides the many imperfections in the hide, allowing the utilization of lower grade hides.

The best leather is astronomically priced, only for the elite.  It is called "Full Gain" leather.  You won't find it much in middle class American homes.  A "Full Grain" leather recliner at home, will cost around 8 times more than the same recliner made of "Top Grain" leather.  It's from the best part of the animal and it is flawless.  I don't know the percentage, but animals yield a whole lot more imperfect leather than perfect leather.

When shopping for leather, some people refer to my 3 categories using different names.  But you get the idea.

I am sorry, but I don't have a good feeling about the material you found.

I know... I too read that the combo materials aren't good.. am bummed because I really love the recliner they make and need to find an alternative for the two-piece one PC is using (hate it).

Ron, just fyi...  I contacted them one more time to ask specifically if it was bonded leather and they indicated no... Euro Poly Hyde.  At any rate, they won't guarantee it won't flake, but I sure like it so I'm going to get a sample to look at the back of the material.

Examining a sample of the material sounds like a good idea.

Just two points of general info I've run across.....

Never used them, but a company called Bradd and Hall (www.braddandhall.com) makes what appears to be a large line of quality RV furniture, including recliners (some ultra leather, some top grain, etc.)

Regarding the real 'Ultraleather' company, I found this response on another website in response to flaking....

"My name is Danielle Boecker and I am one of the Principals of Ultrafabrics, LLC. We have been selling the Ultraleather™ brand products to the RV trade for almost 20 years. Ultraleather™ has become a recognized brand name for superior quality and performance among the RV industry as well as aviation, marine, healthcare and contract seating to name a few. Due to the outstanding performance characteristics of our products we have achieved a high level of success. This has attracted many knock off products which are inferior to the technologies we use to produce the Ultraleather™ brand fabrics. The models mentioned in the blogs are not known to contain the genuine Ultraleather™ product when originally produced by the RV manufacturer. If you can demonstrate that your interiors utilize the genuine Ultraleather™ brand materials we would be happy to accommodate you with replacement product. If you would like to discuss further please call our Quality Assurance Department toll free at 888-361-9216. "
