SO JUST HOW FAST DO YOU GO?
« on: July 18, 2016, 12:24:18 am »
Ok so we just got back from a 4,000 mile trip. I was amazed at how fast many drive their motorhomes. In many places the posted speed was 75 and 80 mph and many Motorhomes as well as fifth wheelers were moving along at those speeds.  So just how fast do you tend to drive your rig?

I refuse to drive those speeds, just one reason being due to stopping distance, another because I miss seeing too much if I can't enjoy the ride.

I don't have many miles under my belt with the Phoenix but with previous RVs the target was typically 60-62 which I plan to continue.  I felt safe and got much better mileage than driving 70-75.

We tow a Ford Edge which dictates speeds 65 mph or below.  Of course, in CA we are limited by state law to 55 mph while towing.

We tend to drive the speed limit or a bit below. John is more conservative and usually stays more in the 65 range even with higher speed limits. On several trips where it was hours and hours of pure highway driving, we drove 75 and 80 when the speed limit AND lack of traffic allowed.

We had a family emergency late January last year and drove from the northwest corner of Oregon to Maryland in just over three days. We maxed the speed limit most of the way and traded off driving. There was very little parked time. We totally killed the battery on the toad (never started her up during the race cross country) but the Phoenix was awesome. Gas mileage was not.

Our preferred driving is a comfortable meander on more scenic roads and we are really cautious in city traffic.

I had a defensive driving course in the Army and the one thing I remember is this quote "Everyone out there is an idiot - drive accordingly"

I haven't enjoyed RVs for all these years by flying down the road at the speed limit.  I normally drive 60-65 and look the country over as we travel.  If I am just burning up interstate that I have driven many times, I may get close to 70.  What I really enjoy is the less traveled highways and fifty miles an hour.

There is a lot to see in America.  Even at 60 seconds per mile (60MPH) you still miss a lot, don't you?

We always tow our Honda CR-V, so 55 to 65 MPH is max for us.

It depends on speed limits with towing considerations, but my "personal max" is just under 70 mph, more like in the 67-68 range.

I never put the pedal to the metal but is sure seems like the rig can go a whole lot faster.  And with the suspension upgrades we had done long ago, I think it could handle the speed well.  I just don't want to get "gallons per mile" fuel economy.

I try to flow with the traffic or just a couple of mph below letting them go around me. If traffic backs up behind me I will pull over or speed up. I have always been a speed demon but in my old age I seem to be slowing down. Doing 80 mph in the PC just seems to fast now a days, 68 is more my max speed now.

Ok so its a mixed bag I guess.  I typically drive around 62 mph, no idea how I ever come up with that number. At most I Run 65. My reasons besides stopping distance is also how I might anticipate the vehicle responding in an evasive move.  Knowing it will not be like any sports cars I've owned or my Motorcycles. Also I find I enjoy the scenery much more as I'm more relaxed at 65 or below. Also as mentioned in Ca the law towing is 55 and I do tow the smart car.

I was just interested after seeing so many running 75 and 80 if I was abnormal (more so than my wife states). Thanks for the feedback.

I travel at approx. 65MPH most of the time.   Might bump up to 70 if the traffic is really moving but never over 70.

60, tops. Now Carol, on the other hand, pushes to 75 despite my complaints. Mpg falls off dramatically then.
